    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  recognize Colonel Delbert M. Bassett for his lifelong commitment
    1-4  to his state and his country; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, Colonel Bassett is retiring from the
    1-6  United States Marine Corps on July 1, 1993, and returning
    1-7  to Texas after a successful career spanning 37 years; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Through the years Colonel Bassett continued to
    1-9  be proud of his heritage as a Texan; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, A native of Marfa, Colonel Bassett grew up in
   1-11  Odessa, joined the Marine Corps in March, 1956, and began naval
   1-12  aviation flight training in 1960; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, During the following 37 years, Colonel Bassett
   1-14  was assigned to duty at various bases around the United States
   1-15  and in England, Cuba, Scotland, Vietnam, Japan, Hawaii, and
   1-16  California; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, In 1963 the young pilot received the
   1-18  Royal Navy's Britannia Award for best weaponry scores of all
   1-19  1962 flight students, and in 1968 he was selected for exchange
   1-20  pilot duty with the Royal Air Force in Scotland flying the
   1-21  F6 Lightning; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, During the Cuban missile crisis, Colonel Bassett
   1-23  was stationed at Guantanamo Bay, and he flew over 200 combat
    2-1  missions with the F4 fighter squadron in 1966 while stationed
    2-2  at the port of Da Nang in Vietnam; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, Throughout his distinguished military career,
    2-4  Colonel Bassett displayed exceptional leadership, professional
    2-5  skill, and meticulous attention to detail in the execution of
    2-6  his duties; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, His service to his country has been marked by
    2-8  true fidelity and allegiance; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Colonel Bassett is a shining example to each
   2-10  of us of the unparalleled courage of the men who so stalwartly
   2-11  defend our country and our cherished freedoms in time of peace
   2-12  and war; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Our great state will benefit enormously from the
   2-14  presence of Colonel and Mrs. Delbert M. Bassett when they arrive
   2-15  in Arlington to resume their Texas residency in anticipation of
   2-16  a new career and to become an integral part of the community;
   2-17  now, therefore, be it
   2-18        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-19  73rd Legislature, hereby designate Delbert M. Bassett an
   2-20  Honorary Texas Colonel with all the attendant rights and
   2-21  privileges thereof and join the people of Texas in extending
   2-22  a cordial welcome to Colonel and Mrs. Bassett on their return
   2-23  to the Lone Star State; and, be it further
   2-24        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-25  Colonel Bassett as an expression of the admiration and respect
    3-1  of the Texas Senate.
