By: Brown S.R. No. 400 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-3 recognize Iris M. Carl who retired after 28 years of outstanding 1-4 service as an educator in the Houston Independent School District; 1-5 and 1-6 WHEREAS, A graduate of the University of Houston with a 1-7 master's degree in education, curriculum and instruction/mathematics, 1-8 Iris Carl has taught mathematics from the kindergarten level through 1-9 the graduate level; and 1-10 WHEREAS, During her tenure with the Houston Independent 1-11 School District, Mrs. Carl served as Director of Mathematics, 1-12 Elementary Mathematics Instructional Supervisor, and Mathematics 1-13 Teacher/Specialist, K-12 Mathematics Resource Center; and 1-14 WHEREAS, On the college level, she has taught Mathematics 1-15 Methods at the University of Houston and has been an instructor 1-16 in NSF/PRIMS at Wesleyan University; and 1-17 WHEREAS, Throughout the years of her exceptional career, 1-18 Iris Carl has been uncommonly generous with her time and energy 1-19 and has undertaken numerous professional projects in addition to 1-20 teaching; she has served as a Coordinator for the Mathematics 1-21 Program for the Academically Able, a Demonstration Teacher, an 1-22 Inservice Program Coordinator, an Instructor for Staff Development, 1-23 and a Curriculum Writer for Regular and Special Programs; and 2-1 WHEREAS, She has devoted countless hours to students groups, 2-2 activities, and projects as well as to teacher organizations; she 2-3 served as President of the National Council of Teachers of 2-4 Mathematics and the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics; 2-5 and 2-6 WHEREAS, Mrs. Carl's professional positions have included 2-7 an appointment by Governor Ann Richards to the Commission on Student 2-8 Learning and an appointment by the Chancellor of the 2-9 University of Pittsburgh to the Board of Visitors, Learning Research 2-10 and Development Center; and 2-11 WHEREAS, A versatile and talented leader, Iris Carl has 2-12 assisted with a wide array of educational programs and served on a 2-13 vast number of national and congressional panels and boards; and 2-14 WHEREAS, An expert in her field, she has published several 2-15 books including Computing with the Tangram, A Guide for 2-16 Teaching Mathematics, K-6, and A Handbook for the Establishment 2-17 and Use of Mathematics Laboratories; and 2-18 WHEREAS, Honors for her work as a teacher have included 2-19 a Teacher of the Year award, a Special Projects Fund Award, and 2-20 a Teacher Innovation Fund Award; and 2-21 WHEREAS, A dedicated and amazingly resourceful teacher, 2-22 Iris Carl instilled in her students an appreciation for mathematics 2-23 and a love of challenge and learning; now, therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-25 73rd Legislature, hereby commend Iris M.
