                                   SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-1        WHEREAS, The Old Stone Fort in Nacogdoches is a priceless
    1-2  Texas historical site; and
    1-3        WHEREAS, Built in 1779 as a Spanish trading post, the Old
    1-4  Stone Fort evokes stirring tales about our forbears and the courage
    1-5  they displayed in bringing their dreams of statehood to fruition;
    1-6  and
    1-7        WHEREAS, Headquarters of four unsuccessful attempts to
    1-8  establish the Republic of Texas, the Old Stone Fort was also the
    1-9  home of Texas' first two newspapers; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Situated on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State
   1-11  University, the Old Stone Fort is a significant part of our past
   1-12  that deserves to be preserved for future generations; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Treasured by Texas historians and those who love our
   1-14  heritage and tradition, the Old Stone Fort has drawn thousands of
   1-15  visitors to Nacogdoches and is of great importance to the economic
   1-16  development of the city and the region; now, therefore, be it
   1-17        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 73rd
   1-18  Legislature, hereby request the Governor of the State of Texas to
   1-19  use discretionary funds for the continued operation and maintenance
   1-20  of the Old Stone Fort.
