1-16 WHEREAS, The Old Stone Fort in Nacogdoches is a priceless
1-17 Texas historical site; and
1-18 WHEREAS, Built in 1779 as a Spanish trading post, the Old
1-19 Stone Fort evokes stirring tales about our forbears and the courage
1-20 they displayed in bringing their dreams of statehood to fruition;
1-21 and
1-22 WHEREAS, Headquarters of four unsuccessful attempts to
1-23 establish the Republic of Texas, the Old Stone Fort was also the
1-24 home of Texas' first two newspapers; and
1-25 WHEREAS, Situated on the campus of Stephen F. Austin State
1-26 University, the Old Stone Fort is a significant part of our past
1-27 that deserves to be preserved for future generations; and
1-28 WHEREAS, Treasured by Texas historians and those who love our
1-29 heritage and tradition, the Old Stone Fort has drawn thousands of
1-30 visitors to Nacogdoches and is of great importance to the economic
1-31 development of the city and the region; now, therefore, be it
1-32 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 73rd
1-33 Legislature, hereby request the Governor of the State of Texas to
1-34 use discretionary funds for the continued operation and maintenance
1-35 of the Old Stone Fort.
