    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                     Dr. Lucille S. Barton Graves
    1-5        WHEREAS, The death of Dr. Lucille S. Barton Graves on
    1-6  February 13, 1993, was deeply mourned by the residents of
    1-7  Lubbock; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Well known in the education field for her important
    1-9  contributions to the black community, Dr. Graves will be remembered
   1-10  for her lifelong commitment to providing young black boys and girls
   1-11  with a good education; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Dr. Graves founded Mary and Mac Private School
   1-13  for young children 37 years ago, and through her patience and
   1-14  dedication she developed it into a successful educational
   1-15  institution that eventually provided classes from kindergarten
   1-16  through high school; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, In her service to her family, her students, and her
   1-18  community, Dr. Graves demonstrated a rare spirit of compassion and
   1-19  caring and was a positive influence in the lives of countless young
   1-20  citizens; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, The first black student to enroll at Texas Tech
   1-22  University, Dr. Graves was proud of her accomplishment and was
   1-23  invited to speak several times to students on campus; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, The devout Christian also helped found a church in
    2-2  the auditorium of Mary and Mac Private School and was responsible
    2-3  for naming it the New Light Baptist Church; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Her example of selfless devotion to children earned
    2-5  her the admiration and respect of citizens throughout the city, and
    2-6  she will be remembered for her remarkable accomplishments; now,
    2-7  therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-9  73rd Legislature, hereby express sincere condolences to the family
   2-10  members of Dr. Lucille S. Barton Graves:  her son, Caesar Graves III;
   2-11  her daughter, Cecile Graves Hunter; her grandson, Timothy Hunter; and
   2-12  her nephew, T. J. Patterson; and, be it further
   2-13        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-14  members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
   2-15  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
   2-16  in memory of Dr. Lucille S. Barton Graves.
