1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 In Memory
1-3 of
1-4 The Honorable Truman Roberts
1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins
1-6 with citizens across the state in mourning the death of the
1-7 Honorable Truman Roberts; and
1-8 WHEREAS, Born August 26, 1917, in Crawford, Texas,
1-9 Truman Roberts attended public schools in Crawford and Abilene; and
1-10 WHEREAS, He graduated from Baylor Law School in 1949 and
1-11 began his law practice in Hico and Hamilton; he began his public
1-12 career serving as County Attorney for Hamilton County from 1950
1-13 to 1956 and then served as District Attorney for the state's 52nd
1-14 Judicial District; during the 1960s, he served as the 52nd Judicial
1-15 District's Presiding Judge; and
1-16 WHEREAS, Considered an expert in his field and well
1-17 experienced after serving the citizens of Texas as a lawyer,
1-18 prosecutor, and trial judge, Truman Roberts was elected to a
1-19 six-year term on the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in 1970 and
1-20 was reelected in 1976; and
1-21 WHEREAS, Distinguished and highly respected in the legal
1-22 community, Judge Roberts served for five years as a member of the
1-23 Executive Committee of the Governor's Criminal Justice Council and
2-1 was a member of the Texas Senate Advisory Committee on Youth
2-2 Affairs; and
2-3 WHEREAS, His professional work on key State Bar
2-4 committees included the Committee on Revision of the Penal Code,
2-5 the Committee on Pattern Jury Instructions, and the Bar-News Media
2-6 Conference Committee on Free Press and Fair Trial; and
2-7 WHEREAS, Throughout his exceptional career, Judge Roberts
2-8 was dedicated to serving the people of Texas with fairness and
2-9 compassion; and
2-10 WHEREAS, Judge Roberts was a man of integrity, strength,
2-11 and generosity, who gave unselfishly of his time to others; and
2-12 WHEREAS, A devout Christian, he was a member of the
2-13 Methodist Church and served as Secretary of the Board of Trustees
2-14 of the Central Texas Conference; and
2-15 WHEREAS, Judge Roberts will long be remembered as an
2-16 exemplary gentleman of superior courage, forthrightness, and
2-17 understanding who lived his life to the fullest; and
2-18 WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Judge Roberts married
2-19 Gloria Stevens Roberts on August 23, 1947, at Valley Mills, Texas;
2-20 their marriage was a strong and enduring one that lasted until her
2-21 death on February 21, 1993; and
2-22 WHEREAS, Judge Truman Roberts was beloved by citizens
2-23 across the state, and he leaves behind memories that will be
2-24 treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore,
2-25 be it
3-1 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
3-2 73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
3-3 members of his family: his children, Robyn Stevens Gray and
3-4 Tracy Ray Roberts; his grandchildren, Bryce Harrison Cole and
3-5 Christopher Bryan Roberts; his sisters, Margaret Allie Fry and
3-6 Helen Ray Quick; and his brother, Jack G. Roberts; and,
3-7 be it further
3-8 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3-9 the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from
3-10 the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do
3-11 so in memory of the Honorable Truman Roberts.
