1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 In Memory
1-3 of
1-4 Gilbert Garcia
1-5 WHEREAS, The death of Gilbert Garcia on March 2, 1993,
1-6 represented a great personal loss for his loved ones and many
1-7 friends throughout the State of Texas; and
1-8 WHEREAS, A native of Brownsville, Mr. Garcia had lived in
1-9 Fort Worth for 47 years; he traveled widely in support of the
1-10 Hispanic community; often his was the first voice heard on behalf
1-11 of Hispanics in business, education, and politics; and
1-12 WHEREAS, A Pearl Harbor survivor, Mr. Garcia served with
1-13 the United States Army in World War II; and
1-14 WHEREAS, Even though activism was not popular in the 1940s,
1-15 Gilbert Garcia worked on behalf of Hispanic war veterans at home and
1-16 across the state, educating the community about their rights and how
1-17 to address their needs; he was greatly concerned about our youth,
1-18 always promoting education and reaching into his own pocket to help
1-19 provide scholarship funds; and
1-20 WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Garcia went to Fort Worth to go
1-21 into the dry cleaning business; at that time he became active in
1-22 the G. I. Forum; and
1-23 WHEREAS, This illustrious civic leader worked all his life
2-1 to better the lives of Hispanics and other minorities; he helped
2-2 form the first Mexican American Chamber of Commerce, tutored
2-3 Hispanic youths, and led a Boy Scout troop; and
2-4 WHEREAS, Gilbert Garcia founded many organizations dedicated
2-5 to serving the Hispanic community including the Mexican American
2-6 Chamber of Commerce, the Lucky 13 social club, Fort Worth Chapter
2-7 of the American G. I. Forum, Chicano Luncheon, and the League of
2-8 United Latin American Citizens Council 601; and
2-9 WHEREAS, Recipient of numerous honors, Mr. Garcia was awarded
2-10 a Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal by Representative Pete Geren in
2-11 1992; he also received the Hispanics of the 90s award and the
2-12 Hispanic Salute award; and
2-13 WHEREAS, A man of great ability and unquestioned integrity,
2-14 he was publisher of the Hispanic Business Directory and was on the
2-15 board of the Private Industry Council for the past nine years; and
2-16 WHEREAS, Gilbert Garcia's lasting legacy to his community is
2-17 immeasurable; his presence will be greatly missed; now, therefore,
2-18 be it
2-19 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-20 73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the members
2-21 of his family: his wife, Herlinda; his son, Gilbert C. Garcia, Jr.;
2-22 his brothers, Guadalupe and Alfredo Garcia; his sister,
2-23 Angelica Garza; and his four grandchildren; and, be it further
2-24 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-25 the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
3-1 from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
3-2 it do so in memory of Gilbert Garcia.
