    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                   Reverend John Joseph Rector, Sr.
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with the
    1-6  citizens of San Antonio in mourning the death of the
    1-7  Reverend John Joseph Rector, Sr.; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, John Joseph Rector was born in 1932 to the
    1-9  Reverend W. I. and Ollie Mae Rector, the seventh of nine children;
   1-10  he began preaching at 18 years of age and was called to
   1-11  Antioch Baptist Church at the age of 20 years; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, In less than one and one-half years a $16,000
   1-13  mortgage was retired and Antioch Baptist Church experienced
   1-14  unprecedented growth; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Pastor Rector was one of the first to send
   1-16  financial aid to the Montgomery Bus Boycott; in spite of death
   1-17  threats, he hosted regular meetings of the National Association for
   1-18  the Advancement of Colored People; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Over the last 40 years, Pastor Rector has
   1-20  ministered faithfully to the physical and spiritual needs of
   1-21  innumerable Christians; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Under Pastor Rector's outstanding
   1-23  leadership, Antioch Baptist Church emphasized black male
    2-1  development and academic excellence; he also stressed the need
    2-2  to develop outstanding choirs; he began to draw plans for a new
    2-3  sanctuary as the church continued to prosper; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Pastor Rector served with great skill as moderator
    2-5  of the Guadalupe Baptist District; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Because of his involvement in church and
    2-7  community activities Pastor Rector was named in
    2-8  Who's Who Among Black Texans; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, A man of spiritual depth and devotion,
   2-10  Pastor Rector performed countless ceremonies and prayed for and
   2-11  counselled his church members during their hardships and times of
   2-12  bereavement; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, Pastor Rector's wisdom, warm spirit, and valued
   2-14  counsel will be remembered with gratitude by those whose lives he
   2-15  touched; now, therefore, be it
   2-16        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-17  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
   2-18  family of the Reverend John Joseph Rector, Sr.; and, be it further
   2-19        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-20  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
   2-21  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
   2-22  it do so in memory of the Reverend John Joseph Rector, Sr.
