    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Located in the heart of the beautiful East Texas
    1-3  piney woods in the City of Palestine, the Anderson County Courthouse
    1-4  has stood for over 80 years as the most significant and most
    1-5  memorable landmark in Anderson County for residents and visitors
    1-6  alike; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, The historic courthouse was built in 1913 after
    1-8  fire destroyed the brick courthouse built in 1886; bonds were
    1-9  issued for the purpose of building the town's fourth such
   1-10  structure at a cost of not less than $150,000, and was designed
   1-11  by Austin architects C. H. Page and Brother; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Of Grecian style architecture, the building
   1-13  has entries through four attractive porticos supported by Ionic
   1-14  columns, and the interior has an unusual spiral stairway with
   1-15  the hallway walls decorated with beautiful Georgia gray marble
   1-16  wainscoting; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, The silver dome and statue of "Justice" are lighted
   1-18  at night and can be seen from many points in the city and county;
   1-19  and
   1-20        WHEREAS, The Texas Historical Commission, the
   1-21  Anderson County Commissioners Court, the Anderson County
   1-22  Historical Commission, and the people of Anderson County
   1-23  committed themselves in 1986 to the preservation and restoration
    2-1  of the magnificent courthouse as a special Texas Sesquicentennial
    2-2  project; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, In 1988 the Texas Historical Commission granted
    2-4  Recorded Texas Historical Landmark status to the Anderson County
    2-5  Courthouse for its significant historical and architectural
    2-6  integrity; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, In 1992 the National Parks Service of
    2-8  the United States Department of the Interior deemed the
    2-9  Anderson County Courthouse to be worthy of special status
   2-10  among the many county courthouses throughout the United States
   2-11  by placement on the National Register of Historic Places; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, County courthouses have been recognized as
   2-13  local symbols of law, justice, and democracy throughout the
   2-14  United States, and Texas has many excellent examples all around
   2-15  the Lone Star State, including the Anderson County Courthouse; now,
   2-16  therefore, be it
   2-17        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-18  73rd Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the Anderson County
   2-19  Courthouse and the citizens of Anderson County for preserving and
   2-20  restoring the majestic edifice for future generations; and, be it
   2-21  further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-23  people of Anderson County as an expression of the admiration and
   2-24  esteem of the Texas Senate.
