    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center in
    1-3  Houston is celebrating the grand occasion of its 25th anniversary
    1-4  on April 3, 1993, and the Texas Senate is pleased to extend
    1-5  congratulations on this important milestone; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, A comprehensive social service agency, the
    1-7  Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center is located in the east
    1-8  end of Houston, a densely populated low income area; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, With financial support from many sources including
   1-10  churches, business and industry, foundations, and state and federal
   1-11  funds, the center provides a variety of services to residents of
   1-12  the neighborhood in a community-wide effort to help the less
   1-13  fortunate to help themselves; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Awarded a joint venture grant from the
   1-15  United States Health and Human Services Agency, the
   1-16  Texas Department of Human Services, and the City of Houston Health
   1-17  and Human Services Department, the center was the first child care
   1-18  facility in Texas to receive a federal grant to assist families in
   1-19  crisis; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Starting with infants, the center provides day
   1-21  care for children of all ages, a reading and study library, a drug
   1-22  prevention program, a juvenile delinquency prevention program,
   1-23  boy scouting, and a senior citizens program; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Governed by a board of directors, the
    2-2  Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center is under the expert
    2-3  supervision of Executive Director Madgelean Bush; all the staff
    2-4  members are trained by various associations, including the
    2-5  Texas Department of Human Services specialists; now, therefore,
    2-6  be it
    2-7        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-8  73rd Legislature, hereby commend the board of directors, the staff,
    2-9  and the men and women who volunteer their time and services to the
   2-10  Martin Luther King, Jr., Community Center; and, be it further
   2-11        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-12  the 25th anniversary celebration as a memento of this grand
   2-13  occasion, with best wishes for a most rewarding event from the
   2-14  Texas Senate.
