No. 527 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Texas State Junior Classical League will 1-3 hold its annual state convention in Houston, Texas, on 1-4 April 2nd and 3rd, 1993, to promote the study and appreciation 1-5 of the classics in Texas by sponsoring competition in classical 1-6 civilization; and 1-7 WHEREAS, The National Junior Classical League is the 1-8 largest academic organization in the United States; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The first state to establish a Junior Classical 1-10 League, Texas has the largest state Junior Classical League 1-11 convention in the United States, consisting of more than 5,400 1-12 members; and 1-13 WHEREAS, Competition at the annual convention is divided 1-14 into three categories: Greek and Roman culture portrayed through 1-15 costumes, plays, and art; olympics with students participating in 1-16 athletic events modernized from ancient times; and intense, 1-17 rigorous oral and written academic competition by which students 1-18 display their knowledge in categories including language, 1-19 mythology, and ancient geography; and 1-20 WHEREAS, A student-run organization, the Texas State 1-21 Junior Classical League consists of 12 elected State officers 1-22 and two appointed State officers; and 1-23 WHEREAS, The Texas State Junior Classical League is to 2-1 be congratulated for its efforts to promote the study and 2-2 appreciation of the classics and to encourage academic excellence 2-3 by Texas students through its support of academic competition; now, 2-4 therefore, be it 2-5 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-6 73rd Legislature, hereby designate April 3, 1993, as State Latin 2-7 Day in Texas; and, be it further 2-8 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-9 the members of the Texas State Junior Classical League as an 2-10 expression of the admiration and high regard of the Texas Senate. 2-11 _____________________________________ 2-12 President of the Senate 2-13 I hereby certify that the 2-14 above Resolution was adopted by 2-15 the Senate on March 31, 1993. 2-16 _____________________________________ 2-17 Secretary of the Senate 2-18 _____________________________________ 2-19 Member, Texas Senate
