    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
    1-3  recognize Mrs. Ruth Hunt, otherwise known as the "fish lady," for
    1-4  her unique contributions as unofficial counselor to thousands of
    1-5  freshmen at Texas A&M University over the years; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Every day students can find her at a table near
    1-7  the bowling alley in the Memorial Student Center, visiting with
    1-8  students; this has been her avocation since 1967 when she moved
    1-9  from Henderson to College Station to be near her son, Jim, who was
   1-10  stationed with the military in Houston; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, In the early 1970s, Mrs. Hunt began visiting the
   1-12  Memorial Student Center occasionally; immediately after being
   1-13  christened "fish lady" because she had informally counselled so
   1-14  many freshmen, Mrs. Hunt felt it her duty to go to the Memorial
   1-15  Student Center every day; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Mrs. Hunt considers herself a substitute mother
   1-17  to the young people with whom she visits; she often advises the
   1-18  students to "hang in there"; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Credited with keeping scores of cadets from
   1-20  dropping out of the Corps program, Mrs. Hunt listens to a student's
   1-21  problems and tells stories of her experiences with the Corps and
   1-22  with the university; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Honored in many different ways, Mrs. Hunt was
    2-1  nominated for Mother of the Year in 1972 by the Corps staff; she
    2-2  is the only woman ever to earn the award without having any children
    2-3  attend Texas A&M University; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, The members of the class of 1972 were so fond of
    2-5  the "fish lady" that they invited her to their 20-year reunion
    2-6  last year and presented her with a wristwatch for being their
    2-7  Mother of the Year; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, The freshman of Texas A&M University and members
    2-9  of the Corps have benefitted immeasurably from the concern and
   2-10  care that Ruth Hunt has given to so many; now, therefore, be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-12  73rd Legislature, hereby commend and applaud Mrs. Ruth Hunt
   2-13  for her invaluable contributions to the morale of the "fish" of
   2-14  Texas A&M University and extend best wishes for years of continued
   2-15  service; and, be it further
   2-16        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-17  this beloved woman as an expression of admiration and gratitude
   2-18  from the Texas Senate.
