    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased
    1-3  to recognize the Ninth Annual Jennie Riley Day Celebration in
    1-4  La Porte, Texas, on May 23, 1993; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, This event honors community and civic leader
    1-6  Eugenia Riley for her magnificent accomplishments during her
    1-7  lifetime; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Known affectionately to her family and friends
    1-9  and throughout the La Porte community as "Jennie," Mrs. Riley
   1-10  volunteered countless hours to improving the quality of life
   1-11  for all citizens; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, During the 30 years she was a resident of La Porte,
   1-13  she contributed to the successful integration of the public school
   1-14  system, was largely responsible for obtaining a civic center for
   1-15  the north side of town, helped establish single-member districts,
   1-16  and worked diligently to establish a health center for
   1-17  La Porte-Baytown and a senior citizen nutrition program; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, For Mrs. Riley's exceptional work on behalf of
   1-19  others, the La Porte City Council named the northside civic center
   1-20  the Jennie Riley Civic Center, and she was also named a recipient
   1-21  of the Jefferson Award; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, In addition to the center, Mrs. Riley instituted
   1-23  black history classes and a work study program for youth with
    2-1  NASA; she aided the organization of the food and medicine pantry
    2-2  at Saint James Presbyterian Church and founded the Blue Jay Drill
    2-3  Team for youth, who participated in fundraising to obtain needed
    2-4  revenue for membership rather than paying dues; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, Jennie Riley spent most of her adult life in loving
    2-6  service to the residents of La Porte and her remarkable life of
    2-7  selfless devotion to others has continued to bear fruit in the
    2-8  years since her death in 1984; now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-10  73rd Legislature, hereby join with the citizens of La Porte in
   2-11  paying tribute to Eugenia Riley on the Ninth Annual Jennie Riley
   2-12  Day Celebration; and, be it further
   2-13        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a
   2-14  memento of this special day with best wishes for a most rewarding
   2-15  occasion.
