    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great
    1-3  pleasure in honoring Aida Porras of Edinburg for her exceptional
    1-4  contributions to the lives of the residents of colonias in the
    1-5  surrounding area; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, For the past 22 years, Mrs. Porras has taught
    1-7  thousands of colonia families basic survival information on
    1-8  nutrition, menu planning, food preparation, money management,
    1-9  and hygiene; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Born into the poverty-stricken conditions of
   1-11  Nogales, Mexico, the young girl developed a severe mental
   1-12  depression; after her marriage to her husband, Medardo, and
   1-13  after the couple moved to Edinburg, her condition grew steadily
   1-14  worse; she sought help from doctors who were unable to restore
   1-15  the young mother to mental health; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, To help alleviate the family's worsening poverty,
   1-17  Aida applied for a job with the Extension Service in 1971 at the
   1-18  age of 31 and was hired as an extension aide with the Expanded
   1-19  Nutrition Program; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Established by the federal government in 1968 to
   1-21  improve the diets and health of low-income American families, the
   1-22  Expanded Nutrition Program is administered through land grant
   1-23  universities in each state; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Mrs. Porras credits her job with saving her life;
    2-2  now fully recovered, she is totally dedicated to bringing help
    2-3  to the families she teaches; her compassion and concern includes
    2-4  distributing donated food and goods to needy residents on the
    2-5  weekends with the help of her husband and children; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, For six months Aida teaches weekly lessons to
    2-7  150 families living throughout the 20 colonias; when the program
    2-8  is completed she recruits 150 more families; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Along with her lessons she teaches hope, love,
   2-10  and self-respect with dramatic results in the improvement of her
   2-11  students' behavior and lifestyles; now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-13  73rd Legislature, hereby commend Aida Porras for her magnificent
   2-14  accomplishments and express its gratitude to her for her important
   2-15  work; and, be it further
   2-16        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-17  her as a token of the esteem of the Texas Senate.
