    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, On April 2, 1993, Mrs. Etta Olney was honored
    1-3  in Plano, Texas, on her 100th birthday; and
    1-4        WHEREAS, A longtime resident of Burnet County, Mrs. Olney
    1-5  was born at Council Creek in 1893, one of 10 children of John Scott
    1-6  and Emma Slaughter Scott and great-grandaughter of the first county
    1-7  judge of Burnet County; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, After graduating from Burnet High School in 1913,
    1-9  Mrs. Olney attended Teacher's School and taught in one-room schools
   1-10  at Dobyville and Lacy Ranch; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, In 1915 she married John Olney, and their marriage
   1-12  was blessed with four children:  Hansford Olney, who was killed in
   1-13  action during a B-26 bombing raid over occupied Europe in 1943,
   1-14  Mrs. Ruth Gillette of Plano, William Scott "Bill" Olney of
   1-15  Denver, Colorado, and Dr. James H. Olney of San Antonio; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, After her husband's death in 1933 Mrs. Olney
   1-17  continued to operate their men's store and cleaning and pressing
   1-18  shop in Burnet, sending all of her children to college; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, In 1953 Mrs. Olney started Jan's Children's Shop
   1-20  in Richardson, Texas, and operated it until her retirement at 78
   1-21  years of age; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, She is a past Matron and lifetime member of the
   1-23  Eastern Star and was a member of the Richardson Business and
    2-1  Professional Women's Club; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, During a long and productive lifetime, she has
    2-3  demonstrated in countless ways her dedication to the welfare
    2-4  of others and has earned the respect and affection of people
    2-5  from all walks of life and all ages; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, She has lived during the most eventful century
    2-7  of this world's history, and in her quiet way Mrs. Olney has
    2-8  been a force for good and a stabilizing influence on those around
    2-9  her during these years; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, In celebrating the centennial of her birth she
   2-11  was joined by her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren,
   2-12  sister, nieces, nephews, and grandnephews, who came from as far
   2-13  away as Colorado, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, and was honored
   2-14  by the Mayor and City Council of Plano, where she presently
   2-15  is a resident of LifeCare Center; now, therefore, be it
   2-16        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-17  73rd Legislature, hereby extend congratulations and best wishes
   2-18  to Mrs. Etta Olney on the occasion of her 100th birthday; and,
   2-19  be it further
   2-20        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
   2-21  for Mrs. Olney as a memento of this special day in her life.
