No. 641 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, Only a few short years ago, it would have been 1-3 unimaginable for a Texas tourist attraction to have a positive 1-4 influence inside the Kremlin in Russia; and 1-5 WHEREAS, Yet "The Promise," a live contemporary musical 1-6 portraying the life and ministries of Jesus Christ, was performed 1-7 24 times during the month of March, 1993, within the Kremlin in 1-8 Moscow, Russia, where the Communist Party ruled for most of the 1-9 20th century; and 1-10 WHEREAS, "The Promise" was the first Passion Play to be 1-11 presented in the Kremlin for at least 800 years; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Part theatrical roadshow and part evangelistic 1-13 ministry, "The Promise" usually performs at the magnificent Texas 1-14 Amphitheater in beautiful Glen Rose, Texas; the musical involved 1-15 over 200 Americans, mostly Texans, many of whom paid their own way 1-16 to Russia to represent Texas' leadership in tourism; and 1-17 WHEREAS, As the Congress of People's Deputies of Russia 1-18 voted on the impeachment of President Boris Yeltsin, members of 1-19 "The Promise" performed the story of Christ before a crowd of 3,000 1-20 just 100 yards away; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The cast of "The Promise" was given seven curtain 1-22 calls at one presentation, and members of the audience had tears 1-23 in their eyes as they left their seats in the Kremlin State Palace 2-1 theater; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Numerous obstacles were encountered by the cast 2-3 of 85 persons and additional support staff: they were asked by 2-4 Russian leaders to suspend the performances scheduled because 2-5 they wanted to close the Kremlin and secure it; tickets to the 2-6 performances disappeared; advanced publicity promised by Russian 2-7 leaders was lacking; and advertising posters disappeared; and 2-8 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to commend the troupe of 2-9 Texas actors and support staff who participated in one of the 2-10 historic moments in Russian history at the Kremlin when the 2-11 Russian government was in crisis; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 73rd Legislature, hereby express its admiration for the officials, 2-14 leaders, cast, and support cast of "The Promise" for their 2-15 magnificent accomplishments; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be presented to 2-17 them as an expression of the deep respect and high regard of the 2-18 Texas Senate. 2-19 _____________________________________ 2-20 President of the Senate 2-21 I hereby certify that the 2-22 above Resolution was adopted by 2-23 the Senate on April 20, 1993. 2-24 _____________________________________ 2-25 Secretary of the Senate 3-1 _____________________________________ 3-2 Member, Texas Senate
