No. 650 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, Corpus Christi Day will be celebrated at the 1-3 State Capitol on April 21, 1993; and 1-4 WHEREAS, The Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce will host 1-5 a shrimp reception at 5:00 p.m. in the Burnt Orange Room of the 1-6 Frank Erwin, Jr., Special Events Center honoring the Members of 1-7 the 73rd Texas Legislature; and 1-8 WHEREAS, First settled as a frontier trading post in 1839, 1-9 the City of Corpus Christi is now ranked as the 64th largest city 1-10 in the United States and the eighth largest city in Texas; happily, 1-11 Corpus Christi has managed to attain this status without sacrificing 1-12 the delightful quality of life that remains one of its chief 1-13 attractions; and 1-14 WHEREAS, This vacationer's paradise, which is located near 1-15 the Padre Island National Seashore, has long been one of Texas' most 1-16 popular seacoast playground cities and the recreational center of 1-17 South Texas; and 1-18 WHEREAS, The beautiful seaside city is the deepest port in 1-19 Texas and the sixth busiest in the nation with ships from nearly 1-20 every country in the world; its major cargoes are oil and refined 1-21 products, chemicals, bulk materials, and agricultural products; 1-22 vessels transporting cargo to and from all ports of the world moved 1-23 more than 72.5 million tons of cargo through the port in 1992; and 2-1 WHEREAS, The Corpus Christi Bay Area's economic growth is 2-2 studded with a bright forecast, creating new jobs faster than either 2-3 state or national averages; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Corpus Christi and the Bay Area continue to 2-5 attract residents as roughly 500,000 people have discovered this 2-6 lovely and desirable region in which to make their home; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The city is doubly proud to have two excellent 2-8 centers for higher education, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, 2-9 formerly Corpus Christi State University, and Del Mar College; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Corpus Christi is a regional center for cultural 2-11 activities; the Bayfront Arts and Science Park is the home for 2-12 the Bayfront Plaza Convention Center, Art Museum of South Texas, 2-13 Corpus Christi Museum, which houses the Spanish Shipwreck 2-14 Collection, Harbor Playhouse, and the Corpus Christi Water Garden; 2-15 the Texas Jazz Festival is one of the longest-running jazz festivals 2-16 in the country; the Corpus Christi Greyhound Race Track gives 2-17 tourists and South Texans a run for their entertainment dollar; and 2-18 WHEREAS, Adding to its numerous attractions is the 2-19 Texas State Aquarium proclaimed by the 69th Session of the 2-20 Texas Legislature as the "Official Aquarium of the State of Texas"; 2-21 and 2-22 WHEREAS, The citizens of Corpus Christi fully support and 2-23 welcome the porting of the U.S.S.
