    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  recognize Wayne A. Showers for his magnificent accomplishments
    1-4  as a member of the Board of Regents of Texas A&M University; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, For the past six years Mr. Showers worked tirelessly,
    1-6  and his efforts resulted in many significant accomplishments in the
    1-7  academic field to the benefit of education, extension, and research
    1-8  in agriculture throughout the State of Texas and the nation; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, The Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in
   1-10  Weslaco has profited from the many contributions Mr. Showers has
   1-11  made specifically to help agriculture in the Rio Grande Valley; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, During his tenure on the board of regents he
   1-13  spoke candidly in support of the agriculture industry; he worked
   1-14  diligently to increase awareness among university officials and
   1-15  researchers of the role that certain agricultural products play
   1-16  in the enhancement of human nutrition and in the prevention of
   1-17  diseases; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, As a representative of the United States,
   1-19  Mr. Showers traveled to Russia as part of a team under the
   1-20  auspices of the Secretary of Agriculture to study the food
   1-21  distribution industry of the country and to promote American
   1-22  agricultural products; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, He was instrumental in creating a Department of
    2-1  Horticulture at Texas A&M University and for securing funds for
    2-2  the construction of a new building to house it; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, A graduate of Texas A&M University with master
    2-4  of science degrees in entomology and horticulture, Mr. Showers
    2-5  has remained committed to the improvement and advancement of
    2-6  agriculture in the State of Texas; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, As a key grower and shipper of valley produce, he
    2-8  has lead the industry to improve vegetable and fruit production
    2-9  with the development of new varieties and cultural practices; now,
   2-10  therefore, be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-12  73rd Legislature, hereby join with the citizens of the Rio Grande
   2-13  Valley in commending Wayne A. Showers for his invaluable service
   2-14  to the field of agriculture; and, be it further
   2-15        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-16  Mr. Showers as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
