    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure
    1-3  in congratulating Roy Montelongo who was recently inducted into
    1-4  the Tejano Hall of Fame during the Tejano Music Awards show on
    1-5  March 12 and 13, 1993, in San Antonio; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Established in 1980, the Tejano Hall of Fame
    1-7  recognizes the achievements of major Tejano composers, songwriters,
    1-8  and recording artists who were responsible for opening doors for
    1-9  today's Tejano performers and composers; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Roy Montelongo y Su Orchestra was one of the
   1-11  outstanding orchestras during the 1960s; much of his remarkable
   1-12  success as a recording artist can be attributed to his ability to
   1-13  pick good songs to record; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, His new albums included several songs that were heard
   1-15  on the air throughout Texas and the rest of the nation; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, His live performances in dance halls appealed to a
   1-17  large audience and the popular musician played to sold-out crowds;
   1-18  and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Born on a ranch between San Marcos and Kyle,
   1-20  Roy Montelongo grew up in Austin with his father, Vicente Montelongo,
   1-21  who devoted his life to caring for his son; he gave Roy his first
   1-22  saxophone at age five and supported his son's music by giving him an
   1-23  opportunity to have a music career; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, During his senior year in high school, Roy was asked
    2-2  to play with his idol, Beto Villa, at the Old Avalon Club in Austin;
    2-3  he performed so well that he was asked to join the band for its next
    2-4  show in Dallas; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, In 1960 Mr. Montelongo joined Isidro Lopez and his
    2-6  band for three years before moving back to Austin to form his own
    2-7  group; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, After the death of his father in 1967, Roy gave up
    2-9  his career as a performer and became a radio announcer; he works
   2-10  part-time for 92.5 FM station in Austin and helps manage a club in
   2-11  Round Rock; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, Music is still a major part of his life, and in 1991
   2-13  Roy went on a Legends of Tejano Music tour; the four-month tour
   2-14  proved successful, and he is planning to be a part of a Legends Hall
   2-15  of Famers tour in the near future; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, His major contributions to Tejano music helped
   2-17  provide opportunities for other Texas musicians; now, therefore,
   2-18  be it
   2-19        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-20  73rd Legislature, hereby recognize Roy Montelongo for his exceptional
   2-21  accomplishments as a musician and recording artist; and, be it further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-23  Mr. Montelongo as an expression of the admiration and appreciation of
   2-24  the Texas Senate.
