    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                            Jose G. Saldana
    1-5        WHEREAS, With the death of Jose G. Saldana on April 5, 1993,
    1-6  the City of San Antonio lost one of its most beloved citizens; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, A man who truly lived the American dream,
    1-8  Mr. Saldana became the owner of one of San Antonio's most
    1-9  successful Tex-Mex restaurants, the Florida Cafe; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Born in Monterrey, Mexico, on May 25, 1914,
   1-11  Mr. Saldana moved to Texas as a young child; after the death
   1-12  of his mother, he assumed full responsibility for the raising
   1-13  of his six brothers; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, His marriage to Elvira Luna in 1939 proved to be
   1-15  a happy and enduring union that would last until his death; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Saldana opened the Florida Cafe
   1-17  in 1940 and the popular restaurant would remain open until
   1-18  Mr. Saldana's retirement in 1968; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Affectionately known as "El Rey" by his eight much
   1-20  loved daughters, Mr. Saldana lavished attention and devotion on
   1-21  his cherished family; he instilled in his daughters the knowledge
   1-22  that family, not business, always came first; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, A convivial gentleman who enjoyed the company of
    2-1  others, Mr. Saldana was a member of the Alamo Social Club and
    2-2  the Monterrey Social Club; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, A devout Catholic, Mr. Saldana was an active member
    2-4  of Saint Michael's Catholic Church; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, His warmth and compassion will remain cherished
    2-6  memories in the hearts and minds of all who knew him; now,
    2-7  therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-9  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
   2-10  the members of his family:  his wife, Elvira Luna Saldana;
   2-11  his daughters and sons-in-law, Elvira and Rodolfo Lopez,
   2-12  Severina and Rodolfo Garcia, Rosabella and Roger Najera,
   2-13  Josie and William Espinoza, Dora and Robert Delgado, Ethel Saldana,
   2-14  Jo Ann Saldana, and Lucille and Miguel A. Mendez; his brothers,
   2-15  Vincente, Jesus, Martin, and Juan Garcia; and his 19 grandchildren
   2-16  and nine great-grandchildren; and, be it further
   2-17        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-18  members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
   2-19  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
   2-20  in memory of Jose G. Saldana.
