No. 683 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-3 recognize the Star of the Republic Museum for its recent selection 1-4 by the Texas Historical Commission for an award for outstanding 1-5 achievement in the area of interpretive exhibits; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The Texas Historical Commission annually presents 1-7 awards to Texas museums for their achievements in the categories 1-8 of exhibits, education programs, media productions, and community 1-9 involvement; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The Star of the Republic Museum has received eight 1-11 awards since the awards program began in 1983; and 1-12 WHEREAS, The museum's recent project, "Sorrow Whispers in 1-13 the Wind," was designed to contrast Indian images and reality in the 1-14 19th century and briefly examine their relationship in the present; 1-15 and 1-16 WHEREAS, The project used exhibits to express the ways in 1-17 which Anglos perceived the Texas Indians as well as how the Indians 1-18 saw themselves and one another; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The project included a historical exhibition, a 1-20 symposium, public programming, and a 29-page booklet examining 1-21 the cultures and experiences of Texas Native Americans in the 1-22 Republic period (1836-1846); and 1-23 WHEREAS, The museum borrowed a large number of high-quality 2-1 artifacts for the exhibits which included recreating the inside of 2-2 a Plains Indian tepee; the exhibits represented, through art work 2-3 and artifacts, the Plains Indians, the Woodland Indians, and the 2-4 Prairie Indians; and 2-5 WHEREAS, The Star of the Republic Museum is a tremendously 2-6 valuable cultural, historical, and educational center for Washington 2-7 County; the Curator of Exhibits, Sherry Humphries, and all who 2-8 participated in "Sorrow Whispers in the Wind" deserve to be proud 2-9 of their successful efforts; now, therefore, be it 2-10 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-11 73rd Legislature, hereby commend the Star of the Republic Museum 2-12 for its exceptional exhibits and express congratulations to the 2-13 museum on its recent award for outstanding achievement; and, be it 2-14 further 2-15 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-16 the museum as a token of high regard from the Texas Senate. 2-17 _____________________________________ 2-18 President of the Senate 2-19 I hereby certify that the 2-20 above Resolution was adopted by 2-21 the Senate on April 22, 1993. 2-22 _____________________________________ 2-23 Secretary of the Senate 2-24 _____________________________________ 2-25 Member, Texas Senate
