    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                             Cesar Chavez
    1-5        WHEREAS, The death of Cesar Chavez on April 22, 1993, marked
    1-6  the passing of a gentle man of peace who dedicated his life to
    1-7  righting the injustice and inequities around him; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Born in desperate poverty on March 31, 1927, the son
    1-9  of migrant farm workers, he rose to become the president of the
   1-10  United Farm Workers of America, the first successful farm workers
   1-11  union in America; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, From his early days as a field worker and organizer
   1-13  with the Community Services Organization, Cesar Chavez firmly clung
   1-14  to a belief in nonviolence and peaceful change; few remained
   1-15  untouched as a visibly weakened Chavez fasted to call attention to
   1-16  the plight of migrant farm workers who lived in squalid conditions
   1-17  and received wages averaging $1,350 a year; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, Rousing the conscience of the nation, Cesar Chavez
   1-19  inspired his fellow citizens to boycott table grapes until the
   1-20  growers in the San Joaquin Valley in California agreed to union
   1-21  contracts; the boycott ultimately forced the growers to sign the
   1-22  contracts and led to the State of California passing the nation's
   1-23  second collective bargaining act for farm workers; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez's commitment to his fellowman remains
    2-2  unsurpassed, and to a whole generation of Americans he will be
    2-3  remembered for his courage and vision; due to his conviction and
    2-4  determination, the children of migrant farm workers can dream of
    2-5  a better future free of the oppressive hopelessness that abject
    2-6  poverty can instill in its victims; now, therefore, be it
    2-7        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-8  73rd Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Cesar Chavez
    2-9  and extend sincere condolences to his wife, Helen, and his eight
   2-10  children; and, be it further
   2-11        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-12  members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the
   2-13  Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so
   2-14  in memory of Cesar Chavez.
