    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Since the first organized football team appeared
    1-3  at Texas A&M in 1893, the Aggies have compiled a century's proud
    1-4  record of 15 Southwest Conference titles and have appeared in
    1-5  19 bowl games, giving the team an 18th ranking nationally in bowl
    1-6  participation; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, Athletics at Texas A&M and throughout the region
    1-8  both came of age in 1914, when the Aggies created the post of
    1-9  athletic director and hired William L. Driver, thus making football
   1-10  an officially sponsored activity, and the area colleges organized
   1-11  the Southwest Conference, setting the stage for serious
   1-12  intercollegiate football competition; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, The Texas Aggies boast 277 All-Southwest Conference
   1-14  student athletes, 39 All-Americans, seven members of the National
   1-15  Football Foundation Hall of Fame, and a Heisman Award winner,
   1-16  John David Crow, the current athletic director; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, The Texas Aggies became the 1939 national champions
   1-18  under Coach Homer Norton, whose 13-year tenure is the longest in the
   1-19  school's history; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, The 1992 team, with R. C. Slocum coaching, compiled
   1-21  an enviable record of 12 wins and no losses; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, Aggie students, who in traditional "12th Man"
   1-23  spirit, stand throughout their team's football games, are legendary
    2-1  in their undying support of their team; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, The world's largest bonfire burns brightly each
    2-3  fall before the game with number-one rival Texas, giving the Aggies
    2-4  a national reputation for enthusiasm and school spirit; now,
    2-5  therefore, be it
    2-6        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-7  73rd Legislature, hereby commend the Texas Aggie football team
    2-8  for its outstanding record and for the honor it has brought to
    2-9  Texas A&M University and to the State of Texas; and, be it further
   2-10        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-11  Coach R. C. Slocum and for Texas A&M University as an expression
   2-12  of the high regard from the Texas Senate.
