    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                           Annie Pearl Baird
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with the
    1-6  citizens of Houston in mourning the loss of respected civic and
    1-7  political leader Annie Pearl Baird, who died on April 17, 1993,
    1-8  at the age of 74; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of the city, Mrs. Baird
   1-10  spent her life in devoted service to her family and the citizens
   1-11  of Houston; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Founder and president of the Taxpayers Coalition
   1-13  of Greater Houston, she spent 17 years as bipartisan spokesperson
   1-14  on behalf of the taxpayer, advocating responsible spending by state
   1-15  and local government agencies; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Tireless in her work for the causes she believed
   1-17  in, Mrs. Baird volunteered her time and energies to various civic
   1-18  groups and was an active member of the Republican Party; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, The beloved daughter of Herman D. and
   1-20  Laura B. Gibson Davis, Annie was born on January 20, 1919,
   1-21  and graduated from Milby High School; she graduated from
   1-22  Rice University with a bachelor of arts degree and earned her
   1-23  master's degree from the University of Houston in 1942; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, Annie Davis married Linus George Sharpe in 1943
    2-2  and the couple were the parents of four children; she married
    2-3  Kenneth H. Baird in 1971; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, Annie Baird lived a full and active life as a
    2-5  mother, housewife, schoolteacher, and realtor; the esteemed
    2-6  individual earned the confidence and respect of all those who
    2-7  lived and worked with her; and
    2-8        WHEREAS, She leaves a legacy of compassion and commitment
    2-9  that will be remembered by the residents of Houston and all whose
   2-10  lives she touched; now, therefore, be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-12  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to
   2-13  the members of her family:  her husband, Kenneth; her sons,
   2-14  Linus David Sharpe and Stephen Arthur Sharpe; her daughters,
   2-15  Laura S. McCutchen and Susan S. Solomon; and her stepson,
   2-16  Kenneth H. Baird II; and, be it further
   2-17        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-18  the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
   2-19  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this
   2-20  day, it do so in memory of Annie Pearl Baird.
