    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with the
    1-3  residents of Ellis County in declaring Wednesday, April 28, 1993,
    1-4  as Ellis County Day; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, A county of rural charm and natural beauty,
    1-6  Ellis County is located in North Central Texas and was created in
    1-7  1849 from Robertson and Navarro counties; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, The county was named for Richard Ellis who was
    1-9  president of the convention that declared Texas' independence from
   1-10  Mexico--the Convention of 1836; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, During the early days, the land in Ellis County
   1-12  served as the buffalo hunting grounds of several Indian tribes; the
   1-13  earliest inhabitants and hunters were the Tonkawa, Kickapoo, Bidai,
   1-14  Anadarko, and Waco; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, Today, Ellis County is one of the leading agricultural
   1-16  areas in the state; although the early settlers were chiefly stock
   1-17  raisers, the land has been cultivated since its first settlement
   1-18  in 1843; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, The fertile black land soils extend through the center
   1-20  of the county and the terrain varies from gently rolling hills to
   1-21  level plain; on the east border are the Trinity River and
   1-22  Chalmers Creek; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, The county's chief economic resource is livestock,
    2-1  with cotton, sorghums, and other grains contributing to its economic
    2-2  stability; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, The county seat is Waxahachie, a city which derives
    2-4  its name from the Indian word for "cow or buffalo creek" and was
    2-5  originally a part of the Chisholm Trail; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, This historic town has been the location of several
    2-7  major films and is well known for its charming Victorian-style homes
    2-8  with gingerbread trim; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, The Ellis County courthouse in Waxahachie
   2-10  is elaborate; it was constructed with granite from Burnet County
   2-11  and red sandstone; Italian artisans were imported to carve the
   2-12  extensive stone exterior; and
   2-13        WHEREAS, The county is host to numerous festive events
   2-14  including the Scarborough Faire which is a springtime Renaissance
   2-15  fair, the Italian festival, the national polka festival, and the
   2-16  bluebonnet trail festivals; and
   2-17        WHEREAS, Residents of Ellis County have preserved the
   2-18  natural beauty of the land and are hospitable and friendly, making
   2-19  Ellis County a pleasurable place to visit; now, therefore, be it
   2-20        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-21  73rd Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the people of
   2-22  Ellis County for their contributions to the state and extend best
   2-23  wishes to them for a celebratory Ellis County Day; and, be it further
   2-24        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-25  Ellis County as atoken of regard from the Texas Senate.
