    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in
    1-3  joining with the citizens of Mexico and Americans of Mexican
    1-4  ancestry in celebrating "El Cinco de Mayo," 1993; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, On May 5, 1862, in the battle of Puebla, the
    1-6  Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza and his army of 1,200 men
    1-7  valiantly fought against the French forces that were invading
    1-8  Mexico to fulfill the dreams of French Emperor Napoleon III for
    1-9  greater personal glory and wealth; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, The triumph of General Zaragoza and the Mexican
   1-11  troops over the forces of more than 7,500 French soldiers
   1-12  preserved the integrity and independence of Mexico by delaying
   1-13  the French conquest for a full year; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, The decisive victory at Puebla was an important
   1-15  battle in the war that resulted in the last major defeat of a
   1-16  European power in the western hemisphere; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, This great victory for Mexico helped to restore
   1-18  the pride and unity of the people and their government; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, General Zaragoza and the Mexican soldiers
   1-20  demonstrated uncommon valor and tenacity when they successfully
   1-21  forced the French armies to retreat; and
   1-22        WHEREAS, The hero of Puebla, General Zaragoza, was born
   1-23  on March 24, 1829, at Presidio La Bahia, near Goliad, and his
    2-1  birthplace is restored and a statue has been erected in his honor;
    2-2  and
    2-3        WHEREAS, It is appropriate that we pay tribute to the
    2-4  memory of Ignacio Zaragoza and the Mexican soldiers in the battle
    2-5  of Puebla and that we recognize the significance of their victory
    2-6  on behalf of Mexico and our Mexican-American citizens; now,
    2-7  therefore, be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-9  73rd Legislature, hereby urge all Texans to join in celebration
   2-10  of Cinco de Mayo and carry forth with the tradition of
   2-11  commemorating this important historical event; and, be it further
   2-12        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
   2-13  remembrance of all who fought for the freedom of Mexico in the
   2-14  battle of Puebla, May 5, 1862.
