1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes special
1-3 pride in recognizing a beloved and respected friend,
1-4 Lias Bubba Steen, who celebrated the joyous occasion of his 57th
1-5 birthday on April 14, 1993; and
1-6 WHEREAS, Lias Bubba Steen has served as Chairman of the
1-7 Texas Employment Commission and Executive Director of the General
1-8 Services Commission; he is currently the Director of General
1-9 Services for The Texas A&M University System; and
1-10 WHEREAS, The son of Lias and Bea Steen of Cuero, Mr. Steen
1-11 is the father of three grown children: Jeffery Steen, an attorney;
1-12 Shannon Steen Mann, an interior designer; and Jennings Steen, a
1-13 student in the master's program in agriculture policy at
1-14 Texas A&M University; and
1-15 WHEREAS, People across the State of Texas recognize
1-16 Mr. Steen as an outstanding citizen and a gifted leader who has
1-17 made innumerable contributions to our state; and
1-18 WHEREAS, While all of this is undeniably true, a few
1-19 members of the Texas Senate would like to address some other
1-20 facets of Mr. Steen's life; in addition to being an outstanding
1-21 citizen, Mr. Steen has many qualities and talents of which the
1-22 public is not aware; and
1-23 WHEREAS, Few people know that Lias Bubba Steen is without
2-1 a doubt the world's one and only, original "Bubba"; as an avid
2-2 collector of cowboy boots and as a man who became a gourmet chef
2-3 because he is too tight to take his dates out for dinner,
2-4 Lias Bubba Steen wins the world's "Bubba" competition hands down;
2-5 and
2-6 WHEREAS, Not only has he garnered that victory, but at the
2-7 age of 57, he has managed to capture several other enviable titles;
2-8 Bubba Steen has established himself as the King of the Red Peppers,
2-9 and he has laid claim to being the Second Best Fajita King in Texas,
2-10 with the author of this Resolution still reigning as number one; and
2-11 WHEREAS, In spite of those fancy titles, the culinary art
2-12 in which Bubba truly excels is making his "famous sauce"; in fact,
2-13 his friends all agree it must certainly be this specialty that makes
2-14 Bubba Steen a winner with the ladies; and
2-15 WHEREAS, Speaking of Bubba's social life, most suspect that
2-16 the real reason Bubba is so often seen escorting adoring women is
2-17 because his true claim to fame is that he was the personal trainer
2-18 of Ruby Begonia of Cuero, the world famous racing turkey; yes, his
2-19 dates never tire of hearing the tales of Ruby Begonia the racing
2-20 turkey and of her "Great Escape" from Cuero; and
2-21 WHEREAS, But now we must come to an end of our roasts and
2-22 toasts to Bubba Steen, except for one more brief observation; if
2-23 the truth be known, Bubba's real forte lies in his talent with
2-24 politics, rather than with racing turkeys; and
2-25 WHEREAS, Bubba has an uncanny ability to convince governors
3-1 of diverse parties of his amazing insight and understanding of state
3-2 government; not only that, Bubba is the only person we know who has
3-3 managed to serve in top positions to three different governors and
3-4 never make a campaign contribution to any one of them--now that is
3-5 a feat that deserves recognition; now, therefore, be it
3-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
3-7 73rd Legislature, hereby congratulate Lias Bubba Steen on the grand
3-8 occasion of his 57th birthday and commend him on his many
3-9 accomplishments; and, be it further
3-10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3-11 Bubba Steen as an expression of esteem and affection from the
3-12 Texas Senate.
