    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud
    1-3  to recognize the Monsignor Kelly High School students of
    1-4  Beaumont, Texas, and their marine science teacher, Terri Clark,
    1-5  for their recent selection for the Governor's Award for Environmental
    1-6  Excellence; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, The students and Terri Clark were presented the
    1-8  award for having developed the only marine debris study of its
    1-9  type on the Gulf of Mexico; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, The 350 students who are participating in the
   1-11  project collect, identify, and quantify debris found along a
   1-12  two-mile stretch of Sea Rim State Park on the Texas coast; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, Since the program began in October of 1992,
   1-14  approximately 20,000 pieces of material have been collected to
   1-15  form a database of information; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The goal of the project is to determine the origin
   1-17  of the debris--how much originates at sea and how much on land;
   1-18  students have identified some manufacturers responsible for the
   1-19  debris and written letters to over 75 companies; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, The project was one of 22 selected from
   1-21  600 applications for funding by the National Science Teacher's
   1-22  Association and Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A.; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, A gifted and resourceful teacher, Terri Clark has
    2-1  inspired her students to take an avid interest in their environment;
    2-2  and
    2-3        WHEREAS, The students have spent many hours collecting
    2-4  and identifying material and they have been asked to provide
    2-5  information from their unique educational project to the Center
    2-6  for Marine Conservation based in Washington, D.C.; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, Considering the growing need for environmental
    2-8  awareness and clean-up throughout the country, the efforts of
    2-9  these students and their teacher are truly exemplary and the
   2-10  project is an important ecological contribution to our state;
   2-11  now, therefore, be it
   2-12        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-13  73rd Legislature, hereby commend the students of Monsignor Kelly
   2-14  High School and marine science teacher Terri Clark for their
   2-15  superior environmental project and extend congratulations to them
   2-16  on receiving the Governor's Award for Environmental Excellence; and,
   2-17  be it further
   2-18        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for them
   2-19  as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
