    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, On May 4, 1993, Matagorda County Day will be
    1-3  celebrated by the proud citizens of Matagorda County in
    1-4  recognition of their illustrious county and its  contributions
    1-5  to the State of Texas; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Established in 1829 when proprietors met and
    1-7  elected officers, the county grew and flourished when Texas became
    1-8  a republic in 1836; and
    1-9        WHEREAS, Matagorda County is composed of 1,134 square miles,
   1-10  including Matagorda Bay, which falls under the jurisdiction of the
   1-11  county; about one-third of the land in this area is suited for
   1-12  agriculture; the principal agricultural crops are rice, cotton,
   1-13  milo, corn, grains, soybeans, and grass; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Because of frequent hurricanes, the county seat was
   1-15  moved from Matagorda to Bay City in 1894; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, This delightful county possesses a healthy economic
   1-17  base; it is home to several commercial enterprises, including
   1-18  petrochemicals, nuclear power, plastics, oil and gas, and
   1-19  agricultural interests; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, A lively place to visit, Matagorda County is the
   1-21  home of the colorful Shrimporee and Blessing of the Fleet and
   1-22  Bayfest; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, From its earliest days, citizens of the county have
    2-1  been participants in the history of Texas; today, the residents
    2-2  celebrate their heritage as well as the present and future; now,
    2-3  therefore, be it
    2-4        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-5  73rd Legislature, hereby congratulate the citizens of the Matagorda
    2-6  area on the auspicious occasion of Matagorda County Day; and, be it
    2-7  further
    2-8        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
    2-9  residents of Matagorda County as an expression of best wishes from
   2-10  the Texas Senate for a most joyous celebration.
