    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Plano East Senior High School academic
    1-3  decathlon team has reached the pinnacle of achievement in
    1-4  academic competition, winning the 1993 national academic
    1-5  decathlon championship; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, Spurred by the memory of a disappointing performance
    1-7  in the 1992 state finals, the Plano East squad captured the 1993
    1-8  state championship before advancing to the national finals in
    1-9  Phoenix, Arizona; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Facing the intense demands and pressures of the
   1-11  two-day national competition, this outstanding group of dedicated
   1-12  students gave a superlative performance, triumphing over highly
   1-13  regarded teams from 43 states and the District of Columbia; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Competing at the highest levels of academic
   1-15  competition requires not only quick and sharp young minds but
   1-16  also countless hours of study and preparation in multiple
   1-17  disciplines; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, The team's supreme achievement was a result of
   1-19  exceptional contributions from members Sunny Chu, Ranjay Halder,
   1-20  Jason Mellard, Karl Martinez, Todd Konkel, Michael Hardy,
   1-21  Sunil Mehta, Brian Bartles, and James Jones; in addition to
   1-22  leading the group to the team title, Sunny Chu, Ranjay Halder,
   1-23  and Jason Mellard also earned well-deserved scholarships for their
    2-1  performance in attaining the top overall scores; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, Outstanding leadership and encouragement were the
    2-3  hallmarks of coaches Joyce Gillam and Jack Worsham, whose tireless
    2-4  efforts enabled each team member to perform at the highest possible
    2-5  level; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, The Plano East Senior High School academic decathlon
    2-7  team members have withstood the rigors of this demanding event,
    2-8  demonstrating an exemplary command of their considerable knowledge
    2-9  to take the national title; and
   2-10        WHEREAS, They also have brought great honor and prestige
   2-11  to their school, their community, and to this state by their
   2-12  impressive achievement, which has continued and enhanced a truly
   2-13  enviable record of success established by Texas high schools in
   2-14  this national competition, and it is appropriate that these young
   2-15  scholars be given special legislative recognition; now, therefore,
   2-16  be it
   2-17        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-18  73rd Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Plano East
   2-19  Senior High School academic decathlon team for their superior
   2-20  achievement in winning the 1993 national championship and extend
   2-21  best wishes to them for future success; and, be it further
   2-22        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-23  members of the team and their coaches as an expression of high
   2-24  regard from the Texas Senate.
