1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 In Memory
1-3 of
1-4 Mario "Cantinflas" Moreno Reyes
1-5 WHEREAS, Mario "Cantinflas" Moreno Reyes, known to audiences
1-6 throughout the world, passed away on April 20, 1993, at the age of
1-7 81, and the loss of this marvelously talented entertainer has
1-8 profoundly saddened the millions of people he had delighted with
1-9 his incomparable comedic genius; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Born on August 12, 1911, in Mexico City, he was
1-11 blessed with the great gift of making people laugh, and by virtue
1-12 of this gift he rose from the obscurity and poverty of his humble
1-13 beginnings to become a national treasure cherished by all of his
1-14 fellow citizens and by Spanish-speaking people all over the world;
1-15 and
1-16 WHEREAS, Mexico's most famous comic actor, Mario Moreno Reyes
1-17 achieved worldwide renown in the form of his memorable creation,
1-18 Cantinflas, and it was in this adopted persona that he will be
1-19 forever remembered; and
1-20 WHEREAS, In the great tradition of comic figures, the
1-21 Cantinflas he portrayed was an endearing character, personifying
1-22 a beleaguered and sometimes bumbling everyman who somehow managed
1-23 to maintain his fundamental human dignity even as he was beset by
2-1 outrageous fortune and calamity; and
2-2 WHEREAS, So popular was this character that Cantinflas
2-3 parlayed his creation into a highly successful screen career,
2-4 playing essentially the same character who displayed the soul
2-5 of Mexico in 56 films from 1936 until his retirement; and
2-6 WHEREAS, His genius indeed was universally loved and admired,
2-7 and none other than the great Charlie Chaplin once called him "the
2-8 world's greatest comic"; and
2-9 WHEREAS, Like the good-hearted character he portrayed on
2-10 screen, Cantinflas was in real life a generous and compassionate
2-11 individual; having attained fame and fortune, he used his celebrity
2-12 status as well as his time and energy to help those less fortunate,
2-13 and he devoted much of his life to charitable causes, especially
2-14 those that focused on the needs of the world's children; and
2-15 WHEREAS, During a long and storied career, Cantinflas
2-16 brought untold joy and laughter to the world, and though his death
2-17 has saddened us temporarily, the smiles that inevitably return when
2-18 we remember him at the height of his illustrious career and those
2-19 happy memories he leaves us ultimately will be his greatest and
2-20 most enduring legacy; now, therefore, be it
2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
