    1-4                    Mario "Cantinflas" Moreno Reyes
    1-5        WHEREAS, Mario "Cantinflas" Moreno Reyes, known to audiences
    1-6  throughout the world, passed away on April 20, 1993, at the age of
    1-7  81, and the loss of this marvelously talented entertainer has
    1-8  profoundly saddened the millions of people he had delighted with
    1-9  his incomparable comedic genius; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, Born on August 12, 1911, in Mexico City, he was
   1-11  blessed with the great gift of making people laugh, and by virtue
   1-12  of this gift he rose from the obscurity and poverty of his humble
   1-13  beginnings to become a national treasure cherished by all of his
   1-14  fellow citizens and by Spanish-speaking people all over the world;
   1-15  and
   1-16        WHEREAS, Mexico's most famous comic actor, Mario Moreno Reyes
   1-17  achieved worldwide renown in the form of his memorable creation,
   1-18  Cantinflas, and it was in this adopted persona that he will be
   1-19  forever remembered; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, In the great tradition of comic figures, the
   1-21  Cantinflas he portrayed was an endearing character, personifying
   1-22  a beleaguered and sometimes bumbling everyman who somehow managed
   1-23  to maintain his fundamental human dignity even as he was beset by
    2-1  outrageous fortune and calamity; and
    2-2        WHEREAS, So popular was this character that Cantinflas
    2-3  parlayed his creation into a highly successful screen career,
    2-4  playing essentially the same character who displayed the soul
    2-5  of Mexico in 56 films from 1936 until his retirement; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, His genius indeed was universally loved and admired,
    2-7  and none other than the great Charlie Chaplin once called him "the
    2-8  world's greatest comic"; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Like the good-hearted character he portrayed on
   2-10  screen, Cantinflas was in real life a generous and compassionate
   2-11  individual; having attained fame and fortune, he used his celebrity
   2-12  status as well as his time and energy to help those less fortunate,
   2-13  and he devoted much of his life to charitable causes, especially
   2-14  those that focused on the needs of the world's children; and
   2-15        WHEREAS, During a long and storied career, Cantinflas
   2-16  brought untold joy and laughter to the world, and though his death
   2-17  has saddened us temporarily, the smiles that inevitably return when
   2-18  we remember him at the height of his illustrious career and those
   2-19  happy memories he leaves us ultimately will be his greatest and
   2-20  most enduring legacy; now, therefore, be it
   2-21        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-22  73rd Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of
   2-23  Mario "Cantinflas" Moreno Reyes and join the millions of people
   2-24  around the world who mourn the loss of one of the world's most
   2-25  beloved treasures.
