    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is
    1-3  proud to join with the citizens of Alice in honoring the
    1-4  William Adams Junior High School Concert Band for being awarded
    1-5  the Sudler Cup by the John Philip Sousa Foundation; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, The Sudler Cup is the nation's most prestigious
    1-7  award for Junior High and Middle School Concert Bands and is awarded
    1-8  only to the very finest such bands in the United States and Canada;
    1-9  and
   1-10        WHEREAS, The purpose of the Sudler Cup award is to
   1-11  identify, recognize, and honor junior high school and middle school
   1-12  concert band programs that have demonstrated particularly superior
   1-13  accomplishments in concert activities over a period of several
   1-14  years; and
   1-15        WHEREAS, The Adams Junior High School Band is one of only
   1-16  two junior high school bands elected for this international honor
   1-17  this year; 15 junior high or middle school bands have been selected
   1-18  for the Flag of Honor during the eight years the Sudler Cup award
   1-19  project has been in operation and seven have been schools in
   1-20  Texas; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, To receive this honor, the band must have
   1-22  achieved and maintained high standards of excellence over a
   1-23  period of several years, must offer a complete and balanced program
    2-1  of musical activities, and must have a director with at least seven
    2-2  years tenure; in addition, the organization should also have been
    2-3  rated "superior" at the state, regional, national, or international
    2-4  level and should have members who have participated in district,
    2-5  all-state, or national honor bands; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, The Sudler Cup awards are made possible
    2-7  through the generosity of Louis and Virginia Sudler, who over
    2-8  the years have established scholarships and awards for young,
    2-9  talented musicians through the Louis Sudler Foundation and the
   2-10  Sousa Foundation; and
   2-11        WHEREAS, This prestigious honor would not have been
   2-12  possible without the excellent leadership of Carol Walther, the
   2-13  talented director of this fine group of student musicians; now,
   2-14  therefore, be it
   2-15        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-16  73rd Legislature, hereby extend heartiest congratulations to the
   2-17  William Adams Junior High School Concert Band of Alice, Texas, for
   2-18  its magnificent accomplishments with all best wishes for the future;
   2-19  and, be it further
   2-20        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be presented
   2-21  to this distinguished ensemble as an expression of the high regard
   2-22  of the Texas Senate.
