1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 In Memory
1-3 of
1-4 Carmen Riojas Gonzales
1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with the
1-6 citizens of Austin in mourning the death of Carmen Riojas Gonzales
1-7 who died April 26, 1993, at the age of 74; and
1-8 WHEREAS, Owner and manager of the ever-popular Mexican
1-9 restaurant Carmen's La Tapatia, Mrs. Gonzales is remembered by her
1-10 patrons for her energy, dedication, and respect for each individual;
1-11 and
1-12 WHEREAS, Her friendliness and hospitality toward her
1-13 customers built one of the most popular dining spots for Austinites
1-14 and visitors to the capital city; and
1-15 WHEREAS, A favorite restaurant for politicians, local
1-16 celebrities, and families, Austinites have supported La Tapatia
1-17 since its establishment in 1948 when Carmen and her husband,
1-18 Raymond, opened for business in a small house; and
1-19 WHEREAS, Known for her business acumen and hard work,
1-20 Mrs. Gonzales was the center of the business that revolved around
1-21 her and included every member of her family; and
1-22 WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community and its citizens,
1-23 Carmen Gonzales earned the recognition of the Mexican American
2-1 women who chose her Outstanding Business Woman of 1978; she also
2-2 served on the Austin Housing Authority Board of Commissioners in
2-3 1982; and
2-4 WHEREAS, Her many acts of kindness to her employees,
2-5 family, and friends endeared her to those around her and all who
2-6 benefitted from her compassion; and
2-7 WHEREAS, Her wise counsel and sound judgment will be deeply
2-8 missed and remembered with gratitude by the citizens of Austin;
2-9 now, therefore, be it
2-10 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-11 73rd Legislature, hereby commend the life of Carmen Gonzales and
2-12 extend sincere condolences to the members of her family: her
2-13 husband, Raymond; her son and daughter-in-law, Alberto R. and
2-14 Raquel Gonzales; her daughter and son-in-law, Evangeline and
2-15 James Briones; her sisters, Mary R. Castillo and Amelia R. Rios;
2-16 and her six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and,
2-17 be it further
2-18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-19 the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy
2-20 from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
2-21 it do so in memory of Carmen Riojas Gonzales.
