No. 856 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of Texas is proud to recognize 1-3 Dr. Peter Schultz, President of Heraeus Amersil, for being 1-4 inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame; Dr. Schultz, 1-5 along with two other scientists, invented the first practical 1-6 optical fiber that revolutionized the communications industry; and 1-7 WHEREAS, After receiving his undergraduate and doctoral 1-8 degrees from Rutgers University, Dr. Schultz continued his research 1-9 in glass and ceramics; he has written over 20 research papers on 1-10 the new technology and its use of fused silica glasses; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Dr. Schultz has been actively involved in glass 1-12 science and fiber optic materials since 1968; he is coinventor of 1-13 the basic patents on doped fused silica fibers for communication; 1-14 and 1-15 WHEREAS, This respected scientist holds over 25 patents; 1-16 in 1977 he received the Weyl International Glass Science Award 1-17 and was a recipient of the SPIE Technology Achievement Award in 1-18 1981; Dr. Schultz was also honored with the Engineering Materials 1-19 Achievement Award of the American Society for Metals in 1983 and 1-20 the Scholes Award in 1986; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The Senate of Texas is especially pleased that the 1-22 site selected for construction of the new Heraeus Amersil plant is 1-23 Austin; and 2-1 WHEREAS, A 22,000 square foot facility, the Heraeus Amersil 2-2 plant will house several cleanrooms; clean, high-purity materials 2-3 will help semiconductor devices manufacturers improve production 2-4 yields, saving time and money; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Heraeus Amersil has received the coveted 2-6 International Standards Organization 9002 certification, making 2-7 Heraeus the only acceptable source for raw material and quartzware 2-8 that are made under the stringent quality controls of ISO 9002; the 2-9 residents of Austin welcome this outstanding company to their city; 2-10 now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-12 73rd Legislature, hereby congratulate Dr. Peter Schultz on 2-13 the momentous occasion of his being inducted into the National 2-14 Inventors Hall of Fame and on the construction of the new Heraeus 2-15 Amersil plant in Austin; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-17 Dr. Peter Schultz as an expression of admiration and esteem from 2-18 the Texas Senate. 2-19 _____________________________________ 2-20 President of the Senate 2-21 I hereby certify that the 2-22 above Resolution was adopted by 2-23 the Senate on May 5, 1993. 2-24 _____________________________________ 2-25 Secretary of the Senate 3-1 _____________________________________ 3-2 Member, Texas Senate
