    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Senate join the citizens of
    1-3  Bryan, Texas, and the entire state in expressing genuine pride
    1-4  and great admiration for Staff Sergeant Russell C. Breland and
    1-5  Sergeant Chris Jackson whose extraordinary acts of courage saved
    1-6  the life of a woman trapped in a burning car; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Breland and Sergeant Jackson are
    1-8  members of Detachment 1, 4th Battalion, 112th Armor of the Texas
    1-9  National Guard and were returning home from drill on
   1-10  October 25, 1992, heading south toward Bryan on Texas 6; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, To their dismay, they watched a car in front
   1-12  of them cross a median, hit a culvert, flip over, and burst
   1-13  into flames; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, As Sergeant Jackson tried to stop a vehicle to
   1-15  summon help, Sergeant Breland kicked in the rear driver's side
   1-16  window of the burning vehicle and tried vainly to reach the
   1-17  unconscious young woman who was choking on her seat belt; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, As Sergeant Jackson crawled into the car and
   1-19  released the seat belt, Sergeant Breland crawled into the blazing
   1-20  car through a passenger window and carried her to safety; and
   1-21        WHEREAS, Their coolheadedness and professional training
   1-22  resulted in the safe completion of the dangerous task; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Through their selfless acts of valor and devotion
    2-1  to duty and with complete disregard for their own personal safety,
    2-2  Russell Breland and Chris Jackson were able to save the life of a
    2-3  young woman; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, The exemplary soldiers received the Major General
    2-5  K. L. Berry Award for Heroic Action at the 34th annual conference
    2-6  of the National Guard Association of Texas for their exceptional
    2-7  actions in keeping with the highest traditions of military service;
    2-8  now, therefore, be it
    2-9        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-10  73rd Legislature, hereby commend and applaud the undaunted
   2-11  courage of Staff Sergeant Russell C. Breland and
   2-12  Sergeant Chris Jackson and express its appreciation to these
   2-13  admirable public servants; and, be it further
   2-14        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-15  these splendid Texas heroes as an expression of the deepest
   2-16  respect and highest regard of the Texas Senate.
