1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, Monsignor James A. Tamayo of Blessed Sacrament
1-3 Church in Laredo, Texas, was named bishop January 26, 1993, by
1-4 His Holiness Pope John Paul II, and the Texas Senate is proud
1-5 to recognize him on this momentous occasion; and
1-6 WHEREAS, He was ordained to the college of bishops on
1-7 March 10, 1993, in Sam Houston Coliseum in Houston, Texas; and
1-8 WHEREAS, For the past three years Monsignor Tamayo
1-9 faithfully served as pastor and Episcopal Vicar of the Western
1-10 Vicariate, and he will be missed by the people who have come to
1-11 know him and value his ministry; and
1-12 WHEREAS, As Titular Bishop of Ita and Auxiliary Bishop to
1-13 Bishop Joseph Fiorenza of the Catholic Diocese of Galveston-Houston,
1-14 the newly appointed prelate will be charged with overseeing the
1-15 spiritual welfare of several hundred thousand Hispanic Catholics;
1-16 and
1-17 WHEREAS, Warmly welcomed into his new post, Bishop Tamayo
1-18 will assist Bishop Fiorenza and Bishop Guillery in fulfilling the
1-19 many requests for a bishop to participate in parish, diocesan, and
1-20 secular events; and
1-21 WHEREAS, The newly appointed bishop believes that the most
1-22 pressing issue in the Catholic Church today is the need to draw
1-23 people closer to their Catholic parishes; and
2-1 WHEREAS, Born on October 23, 1949, in Brownsville, Texas,
2-2 to Antonio Pena Tamayo and Maria Guadalupe Borrego Tamayo,
2-3 Jaime Antonio moved to Corpus Christi with his family and graduated
2-4 from Moody High School in 1968; and
2-5 WHEREAS, Accepted into Saint Mary's Seminary and the
2-6 University of Saint Thomas in Houston, the young novitiate
2-7 graduated cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in Theology
2-8 in December, 1971; he was ordained into the priesthood at
2-9 Corpus Christi Cathedral by Bishop Thomas J. Drury in
2-10 June, 1976; and
2-11 WHEREAS, Well prepared to face the challenges before him,
2-12 Bishop Tamayo enters his new assignment with the blessings and
2-13 support of his family and his church; now, therefore, be it
2-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-15 73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere congratulations to
2-16 Bishop Jaime Antonio Tamayo and best wishes in his future
2-17 endeavors; and, be it further
2-18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared
2-19 for Bishop Tamayo as an expression of the admiration of the
2-20 Texas Senate.
