    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                         Herbert C. Petry, Jr.
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with
    1-6  the citizens of Carrizo Springs in mourning the loss of
    1-7  Herbert C. Petry, Jr., who died September 25, 1992; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Born August 10, 1917, in Dimmit County,
    1-9  Herbert Petry was a longtime member of the Texas Highway
   1-10  Commission and served as its chairman for 18 years; he was
   1-11  appointed to the position by six governors; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, As a young boy, he helped his family run a dairy
   1-13  farm near Asherton and graduated from Springs High School in 1934;
   1-14  he received a degree from Trinity University and was later honored
   1-15  as a distinguished alumnus; he graduated from
   1-16  The University of Texas School of Law in 1939; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, He was dedicated to his practice of law in
   1-18  Dimmit County, where he worked until his death; and
   1-19        WHEREAS, Respected in the community and across the state
   1-20  for his many accomplishments, Herbert Petry was an exemplary
   1-21  gentleman and a well-known civic leader who was named Mr. South
   1-22  Texas in 1966; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, He travelled around the world because of his
    2-1  involvement with Lions International, and he helped with the
    2-2  Crippled Children's Camp in Kerrville, the Texas Lions Club's
    2-3  main charity; in 1991, ground was broken for the H. C. Petry, Jr.,
    2-4  Sports Complex in Kerrville; and
    2-5        WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity,
    2-6  Mr. Petry gave unselfishly of his time to others; and
    2-7        WHEREAS, A devout Christian, he was a member of the First
    2-8  United Methodist Church in Carrizo Springs; and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Herbert Petry lived his life to the fullest, and
   2-10  his wisdom, warmth, enthusiasm, and compassion will not be
   2-11  forgotten by those who knew him; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather,
   2-13  and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
   2-14  his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it
   2-15        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-16  73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the
   2-17  bereaved family of Herbert C. Petry, Jr.:  his wife,
   2-18  Josephine White Petry; his sons, Boothe Wright Petry and
   2-19  John Wright Petry; his brother, Frank Petry; and his 10
   2-20  grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and, be it further
   2-21        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-22  the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy
   2-23  from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day,
   2-24  it do so in memory of Herbert C. Petry, Jr.
