    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Senate join with the
    1-3  citizens of Austin and the entire state in expressing their
    1-4  great admiration of Melissa Arana for her extraordinary act of
    1-5  courage that has brought genuine pride to her community;
    1-6  and
    1-7        WHEREAS, Melissa saved the life of her seven-year-old brother,
    1-8  Abraham, minutes after a train he was trying to board severed his
    1-9  legs; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, In the company of two of her brothers and a cousin,
   1-11  Melissa watched in horror as the brothers attempted to hop the
   1-12  train for a quick ride to visit their grandmother; and
   1-13        WHEREAS, After the older of the two successfully boarded
   1-14  the train by grabbing onto a ladder and pulling himself up, young
   1-15  Abraham tried to follow but his hand slipped, and he fell on his
   1-16  back with his legs on the tracks; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Melissa pulled her brother from under the train and
   1-18  carried him nearly 200 yards to the South Austin Medical Center
   1-19  where doctors managed to save the boy's life; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Thanks to Melissa's coolheaded actions and quick
   1-21  thinking, Abraham is recovering from his ordeal and will soon be
   1-22  fitted with prosthetics; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, In the performance of this selfless act, Melissa
    2-1  has brought honor to herself, her family, and her community; it
    2-2  is truly an inspiration to all of us that such compassion and
    2-3  courage exists in the world today; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, It is fitting for the Texas Senate to commend the
    2-5  valor of Melissa Arana and recognize her as an outstanding citizen
    2-6  of Texas and a most distinguished Texas heroine; now, therefore,
    2-7  be it
    2-8        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-9  73rd Legislature, hereby commend the undaunted courage of
   2-10  Melissa Arana and express its gratitude to this brave young girl;
   2-11  and, be it further
   2-12        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
   2-13  Melissa as a token of the deep respect of the Texas Senate.
