No. 916 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Luis "Chito" Garza, Jr. 1-5 WHEREAS, The death of well-known Starr County rancher, 1-6 teacher, and administrator Luis "Chito" Garza, Jr., who passed away 1-7 on November 25, 1992, at the age of 71, was deeply mourned by the 1-8 residents of Alice and the surrounding area; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The many important achievements of this distinguished 1-10 educator contributed to the development of the school districts he 1-11 so faithfully served; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Known to his friends and family as "Chito," 1-13 Mr. Garza was born in Starr County on September 13, 1921, and 1-14 grew up on his family's ranch; he was a star basketball player at 1-15 Rio Grande High School and graduated from Texas A&I University with 1-16 a bachelor's degree in agriculture; he later earned a master's degree 1-17 in education at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Mr. Garza enlisted in the Army Air Corps during 1-19 World War II, serving his country with honor; at the end of the war 1-20 he returned to Starr County to finish his education; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Chito Garza married Juanita Vale on January 29, 1945, 1-22 and the couple became the loving parents of two sons; the family 1-23 moved to San Antonio in 1959 when Mr. Garza became a teacher and 2-1 football coach at Leal Middle School in the Harlandale Independent 2-2 School District; noted for his diligence and ability, he eventually 2-3 became vice-principal of the school; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Known as a disciplinarian, Mr. Garza was also a 2-5 loving and compassionate teacher who cared deeply for his pupils; he 2-6 provided countless students with a firm foundation on which to build 2-7 their lives; and 2-8 WHEREAS, For the last six years of his career in education, 2-9 he served as administrator in charge of risk management for the 2-10 San Antonio Independent School District; his retirement in 1986 2-11 provided an opportunity for him to enjoy hunting and fishing on 2-12 his family's ranch; and 2-13 WHEREAS, A devout Christian gentleman, Mr. Garza was a member 2-14 of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus 2-15 Council Number 786; and 2-16 WHEREAS, His wise counsel and sound judgment will be deeply 2-17 missed and remembered with gratitude by those who knew and worked 2-18 with him; now, therefore, be it 2-190 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so 2-201 in memory of Luis "Chito" Garza, Jr. 2-212 _____________________________________ 2-223 President of the Senate 2-234 I hereby certify that the 2-245 above Resolution was adopted by 2-256 the Senate on May 11, 1993, 3-17 by a rising vote. 3-28 _____________________________________ 3-39 Secretary of the Senate 3-40 _____________________________________ 3-51 Member, Texas Senate
