    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Reverend J. J. Roberson, pastor of Mount Hebron
    1-3  Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas, has been selected as
    1-4  the new president of the Baptist Ministers Association of Houston
    1-5  and Vicinity and will be officially installed at the inaugural
    1-6  banquet on May 28, 1993, at the Westin Galleria Hotel; and
    1-7        WHEREAS, The Baptist Ministers Association of Houston and
    1-8  Vicinity is the oldest and largest institution of its kind with
    1-9  more than 300 ministers representing over 100,000 congregational
   1-10  members; and
   1-11        WHEREAS, Founder and organizer of Mount Hebron Missionary
   1-12  Baptist Church, Incorporated, Reverend Roberson has served as the
   1-13  church's pastor since its establishment in 1958; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, From its humble beginnings in the garage of the
   1-15  pastor's home, the church has grown rapidly from 16 members to
   1-16  over 2,000, including 1,022 families; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, Through the years Reverend Roberson has ministered
   1-18  faithfully to the spiritual needs of innumerable Christians and has
   1-19  dedicated his life to the work of Mount Hebron Baptist Church; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, A strong defender of the Baptist faith,
   1-21  Reverend Roberson is interested in the civic, educational,
   1-22  and religious development of his people; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, He has been deeply involved in various community
    2-1  organizations devoted to the improvement of the neighborhood and
    2-2  the city; and
    2-3        WHEREAS, The esteemed minister has served as 1st
    2-4  vice-president of the Baptist Ministers Association of Houston
    2-5  and Vicinity, as 2nd vice-moderator of the Independent Missionary
    2-6  Baptist General Association of Texas, and as secretary-treasurer
    2-7  of Missionary Baptist General Convention of Texas BTU Board; and
    2-8        WHEREAS,  A native of New Gulf, Texas, Reverend Roberson was
    2-9  educated in the public school system of Wharton County and attended
   2-10  Southwestern Seminary and Texas Southern University; he received
   2-11  his doctor of divinity degree from Mount Hope Bible College; and
   2-12        WHEREAS, A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the
   2-13  United States Army and is commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars
   2-14  Eugene Warren Post Number 471; now, therefore, be it
   2-15        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-16  73rd Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to the
   2-17  Reverend J. J. Roberson as he assumes the duties of president
   2-18  of the Baptist Ministers Association of Houston and Vicinity;
   2-19  and, be it further
   2-20        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
   2-21  as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate with best
   2-22  wishes for a most memorable occasion.
