1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION
1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
1-3 recognize and honor an outstanding citizen of the State of Texas,
1-4 John V. McMillan, who is celebrating his 80th birthday this year;
1-5 and
1-6 WHEREAS, A native Texan, this esteemed gentleman married
1-7 Katherine McMillan and together they made a home and raised their
1-8 daughter, Jeri Anfin; they are proud of their four grandsons, four
1-9 great-grandsons, and three great-granddaughters; and
1-10 WHEREAS, Fort Worth is indeed fortunate to count Mr. McMillan
1-11 as one of her most dedicated leaders; his civic activities include
1-12 being past president of the North Fort Worth Business Association
1-13 and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and serving on the board of
1-14 directors of the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce, the Fort Worth
1-15 Chamber of Commerce's Convention and Visitor's Bureau, the Downtown
1-16 Stock Show Auction Syndicate, Downtown Fort Worth, Incorporated,
1-17 and the Fort Worth Police Officer's Award Foundation; and
1-18 WHEREAS, This prominent citizen has given tirelessly of his
1-19 energy and talents to his community; he is a member of the Lions
1-20 Club and the Fort Worth Metropolitan Black Chamber of Commerce and
1-21 has served as treasurer of the Neighbors Together for a Better
1-22 Fort Worth and cochairman and campaign treasurer of the Fort Worth
1-23 Citizens on the Move; and
2-1 WHEREAS, After graduating from high school in Houston,
2-2 Mr. McMillan attended Southwestern Business College in Houston
2-3 before entering the business world; and
2-4 WHEREAS, He was first associated with the A&P grocery chain,
2-5 went on to responsible positions with Coca-Cola, and then developed
2-6 a small chain of convenience grocery stores; in 1952 he liquidated
2-7 all his business assets to accept the office of president, general
2-8 manager, and co-owner of Jax Distributing Company of Dallas; sales
2-9 almost doubled and his company became very profitable; in 1966,
2-10 Mr. McMillan sold all of his interests in Jax in order to assume
2-11 the Coors distributorship for Tarrant County; and
2-12 WHEREAS, Capitalizing on his expertise, Mr. McMillan
2-13 purchased all of his partner's stock in the distributorship and
2-14 became sole owner; his business continued to expand and he opened
2-15 another warehouse facility in Arlington; in 1982 the business
2-16 expanded again and was moved to its present location in a 127,000
2-17 square foot building on Interstate 35; and
2-18 WHEREAS, This extraordinarily capable gentleman and civic
2-19 leader's activities have contributed to the steady growth of his
2-20 town and his state; now, therefore, be it
2-21 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-22 73rd Legislature, hereby commend John V. McMillan for his important
2-23 contributions to the citizens of his community and his state; and,
2-24 be it further
2-25 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3-1 John V. McMillan as an expression of the appreciation and esteem of
3-2 the Texas Senate.
