By: Brown S.R. No. 927 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Stanley P. Smock 1-5 WHEREAS, The death of Stanley P. Smock of 1-6 Lake Jackson, Texas, on April 25, 1993, was deeply mourned by his 1-7 fellow residents; and 1-8 WHEREAS, A native of Corning, New York, Mr. Smock was the 1-9 son of Clifford and Ada Smock; he attended college in New York State 1-10 and married Mary Barney in 1947; and 1-11 WHEREAS, A veteran of World War II, he served his country 1-12 with valor in the United States Air Force as a radio operator 1-13 in China; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Mr. Smock was an accomplished trumpet player who 1-15 played solos in church when he was a child; at age 13 he played with 1-16 a local dance band and began a lifelong love of swing music; and 1-17 WHEREAS, In the early 1940s he toured with a West Coast band 1-18 and later played in the original Dow band as well as a variety of 1-19 swing bands; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Mr. Smock earned his bachelor of science degree 1-21 in chemistry from the University of Houston in 1950 and moved to 1-22 Lake Jackson in 1951; he worked in the Glycol Lab at Dow before 1-23 becoming supervisor of the Glycerine Lab; a dedicated and diligent 2-1 worker, he was responsible for quality control in the Tech Center 2-2 until his retirement in 1982; and 2-3 WHEREAS, A member of the First United Methodist Church of 2-4 Lake Jackson and the Riverside Country Club, he enjoyed playing golf 2-5 and working in his garden; and 2-6 WHEREAS, A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Mr. Smock 2-7 was loved by his family and friends who shared his companionship and 2-8 his memory will live on in their hearts; now, therefore, be it 2-9 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-10 73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to his bereaved 2-11 family: his wife, Mary Smock; his daughter and son-in-law, Ginny and 2-12 Bruce Brant; his son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Martha Smock; his 2-13 granddaughters, Sarah Brant, Mariah Brant, and Hannah Smock; his 2-14 sisters, Lucille Smith, Harriet Blessing, and Jeanne Grant; and 2-15 his brother, Alden Smock; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-17 members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 2-18 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in 2-19 memory of Stanley P.
