No. 928 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to 1-3 recognize Captain Mike Gee, Angleton's first black police officer, 1-4 who is retiring after 26 years of loyal service with the Angleton 1-5 Police Department; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Hired at the age of 43 with no formal police 1-7 training, Mike Gee agreed to take a position with the Angleton 1-8 Police Department to help ease tension between police and 1-9 Angleton's black citizens; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The difficulties Mike Gee faced in 1967 as the 1-11 first black police officer were staggering; he was first told he 1-12 would have to wear a uniform different from the type worn by other 1-13 patrolmen, and he spent his first 10 months patrolling the west 1-14 side of town in his own car with no police radio, though he was 1-15 often making calls by himself where guns were involved; and 1-16 WHEREAS, A man of exemplary courage and deep conviction, 1-17 Mike Gee insisted on a standard uniform, and in January of 1968, 1-18 he was successful in persuading authorities to give him a patrol 1-19 car with a radio and some formal training; and 1-20 WHEREAS, A former floor salesman, television repairman, 1-21 and service station employee, Mike Gee worked his way up from a 1-22 part-time patrolman's position in an all-white police department 1-23 to the position of captain; and 2-1 WHEREAS, During his distinguished career, he was successful 2-2 in helping to improve relationships between police officers and 2-3 black citizens, and he paved the way for other black citizens to 2-4 serve on the Angleton Police Force; and 2-5 WHEREAS, Captain Gee became an outstanding police officer 2-6 who displayed expertise and sound judgment in dealing with the 2-7 unique challenges of law enforcement duty; and 2-8 WHEREAS, He is a man of tremendous strength, generosity, 2-9 integrity, and tenacity, and his presence in the Angleton Police 2-10 Department will be greatly missed by his colleagues and by citizens 2-11 across the city; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 73rd Legislature, hereby commend Captain Mike Gee for his admirable 2-14 valor and his perseverance and extend best wishes to him for much 2-15 happiness in the retirement years ahead; and, be it further 2-16 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-17 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-18 _____________________________________ 2-19 President of the Senate 2-20 I hereby certify that the 2-21 above Resolution was adopted by 2-22 the Senate on May 13, 1993. 2-23 _____________________________________ 2-24 Secretary of the Senate 2-25 _____________________________________ 3-1 Member, Texas Senate
