No. 935 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is especially 1-3 pleased to pay tribute to a distinguished social worker, 1-4 Dr. Ira Christopher Colby, for his endless devotion and dedication 1-5 to enhancing the lives of those citizens residing in Tarrant County; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, This illustrious professor has worked diligently 1-8 to better the lives of his students by encouraging them to become 1-9 active participants in the political and social service arena; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Students of The University of Texas at Arlington 1-11 admire this gracious and warm individual, who has given so 1-12 generously and unselfishly of his time, energy, and expertise to 1-13 his community and his students; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Dr. Colby is known for his leadership and vision 1-15 in the Challenge/A.C.E. Neighborhood Mentors Project, which 1-16 mobilized Fort Worth citizens to rid their neighborhoods of alcohol 1-17 and other drugs; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Dr. Colby is known for his dynamic and outstanding 1-19 leadership in such organizations as Saint Teresa's Home, voter 1-20 registration projects, the Fort Worth Police Department, the Texas 1-21 Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, the Tarrant County 1-22 Hospital District, Arlington Human Services Planners, Fort Worth 1-23 Salvation Army, Tarrant County NASW, Texas NASW, and Camp Fire of 2-1 North Texas; and 2-2 WHEREAS, For his lifetime of commitment to social services 2-3 and teaching, he has been honored as Social Worker of the Year by 2-4 the Tarrant County NASW and was the recipient of the Gertrude Golliday 2-5 Memorial Teaching Excellence Award from The University of Texas at 2-6 Arlington and the Fernando G. Torgerson Teaching Award from the School 2-7 of Social Work, The University of Texas at Arlington; and 2-8 WHEREAS, He has also been selected as a Board Member 2-9 Emeritus of the Arlington Night Shelter, which he helped create; 2-10 and 2-11 WHEREAS, Ira C. Colby is the President of Colby, Colby, and 2-12 Associates, which provides agency consultation, program evaluation, 2-13 and in-service training throughout the social service industry; and 2-14 WHEREAS, Chairperson of the Political Action for Candidate 2-15 Election for Texas National Association of Social Workers, 2-16 Dr. Ira Colby currently serves as Associate Professor of Social 2-17 Work at The University of Texas at Arlington; and 2-18 WHEREAS, His extensive research and numerous publications 2-19 have broken new ground in the field of social work, proving him to 2-20 be an author extraordinaire; and 2-21 WHEREAS, Dr. Ira C. Colby married Deborah Norton on 2-22 September 1, 1970, and they have one lovely child, Lisa, who has 2-23 been a great source of joy and fulfillment to them throughout the 2-24 years, along with their eight adopted aspiring graduate students: 2-25 Deneesa Deibel, Troyce Hamm, Diane Bourgeois, Tyler Goar, 3-1 Kathy Poore, Juli McNeil, Cindy Dixon, and Sean Leonard, who have 3-2 also been an equal source of pleasure and irritation; and 3-3 WHEREAS, The State of Texas has benefitted immeasurably 3-4 from the humanitarian work of Dr. Ira Christopher Colby; now, 3-5 therefore, be it 3-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-7 73rd Legislature, hereby congratulate and commend Dr. Ira C.
