No. 947 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure 1-3 in recognizing one of the greatest charros in the world today, 1-4 Gerardo "Jerry" Diaz; and 1-5 WHEREAS, A five-time national champion charro, Jerry Diaz 1-6 is an outstanding horseman and showman who has achieved international 1-7 fame and who has helped preserve the tradition of the Mexican 1-8 charreria; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The son of "Pepe" Diaz, a lifelong charro who 1-10 founded the first charro organization in the United States, 1-11 Jerry Diaz was in training as a youngster to become a charro, 1-12 and for years now, he and his horses have been giving spectacular 1-13 performances and drawing worldwide enthusiasm for his art; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In addition to his legendary horsemanship, 1-15 Jerry Diaz has perfected his lariat skills, executing rope tricks 1-16 that intrigue spectators and that take lariat work to a new level 1-17 of artistry; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Jerry Diaz is a member of the Professional 1-19 Rodeo Cowboy Association whose members voted his routine the 1-20 Best Specialty Act in Texas, and he competes annually at the 1-21 National Charro Championship in California where he and his 1-22 team have won innumerable trophies; and 1-23 WHEREAS, Mr. Diaz has presented exhibitions at the Belmont 2-1 Stakes International Horse Show and has performed before heads of 2-2 state; he performed before 1,500 members of the press in front of 2-3 the Alamo during President Bush's drug summit in 1991; and 2-4 WHEREAS, An exemplary and hardworking gentleman, Mr. Diaz 2-5 spends his time training horses and conducting clinics for students 2-6 of the tradition, passing down the secrets of this unique vocation; 2-7 and 2-8 WHEREAS, In tribute to his dedication to preserving the 2-9 time-honored tradition of the charro and to his amazing skills and 2-10 achievements, Jerry Diaz was awarded the Gold Spur by the Federation 2-11 of Charros; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 73rd Legislature, hereby give praise to Jerry Diaz for his superior 2-14 equestrian skills and his unparalleled mastery of the art of a 2-15 charro and extend appreciation for his devotion to the tradition 2-16 of the Mexican charreria; and, be it further 2-17 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-18 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-19 _____________________________________ 2-20 President of the Senate 2-21 I hereby certify that the 2-22 above Resolution was adopted by 2-23 the Senate on May 14, 1993. 2-24 _____________________________________ 2-25 Secretary of the Senate 3-1 _____________________________________ 3-2 Member, Texas Senate
