    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to
    1-3  recognize the Texas Special Olympics which is celebrating its
    1-4  25th anniversary; and
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Texas Special Olympics provides year-round
    1-6  training and athletic competition for children and adults with
    1-7  mental retardation; and
    1-8        WHEREAS, Having the opportunity to develop physical fitness,
    1-9  show courage, and take part in the sharing of gifts and friendship
   1-10  with families, friends, and communities, the contestants benefit
   1-11  immeasurably from competition in these olympics; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Contributing to the development of physical,
   1-13  psychological, and social skills, the Special Olympics provides
   1-14  successful experiences to the participators who experience
   1-15  confidence and build a more positive self-image; and
   1-16        WHEREAS, The games have grown from the first summer games
   1-17  held in 1969 in Waco with 350 entrants to the Special Olympics of
   1-18  today, which totalled at least 22,000 statewide competitors in the
   1-19  past year; and
   1-20        WHEREAS, Sports that are included in the games are aquatics,
   1-21  basketball, bowling, cycling, equestrian events, figure skating,
   1-22  gymnastics, power lifting, roller skating, soccer, softball,
   1-23  tennis, track and field, and volleyball; and
    2-1        WHEREAS, From May 19 through May 21, 1993, 3,700 athletes,
    2-2  1,500 coaches, 4,000 volunteers, and 1,000 family members and fans
    2-3  throughout the State of Texas will convene in Denton on the campuses
    2-4  of the University of North Texas and Texas Woman's University for
    2-5  the Silver Anniversary Summer Games, bringing publicity to the
    2-6  event; now, therefore, be it
    2-7        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
    2-8  73rd Legislature, hereby recognize the Texas Special Olympics on
    2-9  the momentous occasion of its silver anniversary; and, be it further
   2-10        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-11  Texas Special Olympics as an expression of esteem from the
   2-12  Texas Senate.
