    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud
    1-3  to recognize Dr. Shelley Poe Roaten, Jr., for his 10 years of
    1-4  exceptional service to the Waco Family Practice Center and the
    1-5  people of Waco; and
    1-6        WHEREAS, President of the Waco Family Practice Center
    1-7  and the Residency Program Director, the esteemed physician will
    1-8  be honored on June 8, 1993, for his work in recruiting medical
    1-9  school graduates into the family practice field and for guiding
   1-10  the Waco clinic as well as overseeing its growth and service to
   1-11  the McLennan County community; and
   1-12        WHEREAS, Dr. Roaten attended Del Mar College in
   1-13  Corpus Christi, Texas, and received his bachelor of science degree
   1-14  from the College of Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin;
   1-15  he continued his medical studies at The University of Texas Health
   1-16  Science Center at San Antonio where he earned his medical degree
   1-17  in 1974; and
   1-18        WHEREAS, The young intern served his family practice
   1-19  residency at the Bexar County Teaching Hospitals in San Antonio
   1-20  from 1974 to 1977 and was certified as a Diplomate by the American
   1-21  Board of Family Practice and the National Board of Medical Examiners;
   1-22  and
   1-23        WHEREAS, An Associate Professor in Family Practice
    2-1  and Community Medicine at The University of Texas Southwestern
    2-2  Medical Center at Dallas since 1990, Dr. Roaten also taught for
    2-3  seven years at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston; and
    2-4        WHEREAS, He is the recipient of numerous honors and
    2-5  awards including The University of Texas M.D. Anderson Award
    2-6  for Excellence in Oncology in 1987; he is the author of various
    2-7  articles and books devoted to family practice and related research;
    2-8  and
    2-9        WHEREAS, Dr. Roaten has shared his expertise and
   2-10  considerable experience with his colleagues as president of
   2-11  the board of directors of the McLennan County Medical Education
   2-12  and Research Foundation and as president of the board of directors
   2-13  of the Waco Family Practice Foundation; and
   2-14        WHEREAS, An accomplished speaker, Dr. Roaten has addressed
   2-15  workshops and conferences around the state; and
   2-16        WHEREAS, Dr. Roaten is truly deserving of legislative
   2-17  recognition for his unfailing efforts during the 73rd Legislature
   2-18  to pass measures to expand the family practice clinic concept; now,
   2-19  therefore, be it
   2-20        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-21  73rd Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Shelley Poe Roaten, Jr.,
   2-22  for his exceptional contributions to the medical profession
   2-23  and extend best wishes to him in his new position as Chairman
   2-24  of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at
   2-25  The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas;
    3-1  and, be it further
    3-2        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
    3-3  this esteemed physician as an expression of the admiration and
    3-4  appreciation of the Texas Senate.
