    1-1                           SENATE RESOLUTION
    1-2                               In Memory
    1-3                                  of
    1-4                             Cesar Chavez
    1-5        WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with the
    1-6  citizens of El Paso and the family and friends of Cesar Chavez
    1-7  in mourning his death on April 22, 1993, and paying tribute to
    1-8  the memory of this world-renowned proponent of farm workers rights
    1-9  on May 23, 1993; and
   1-10        WHEREAS, This champion of the rights of others lived
   1-11  a life filled with passion; he truly believed in peaceful
   1-12  civil disobedience; he dedicated his life to ceaseless toil
   1-13  to win protection for the rights of others; and
   1-14        WHEREAS, Born on March 31, 1927, to migrant farm workers
   1-15  who lived in great poverty, Cesar Chavez succeeded in becoming
   1-16  the president of the United Farm Workers of America; and
   1-17        WHEREAS, In his youth he toiled in the fields and
   1-18  organized the Community Services Organization; sustaining him
   1-19  through his difficult experiences was the belief that change could
   1-20  be brought about through peaceful methods; he undertook a fast to
   1-21  draw attention to the squalid circumstances in which every migrant
   1-22  farm worker lived and worked; and
   1-23        WHEREAS, Achieving his goal to attract media coverage for
    2-1  the plight of the farm worker, Chavez organized a boycott of
    2-2  table grapes grown by growers in the San Joaquin Valley in order
    2-3  to force the owners who hired the migrant laborers to allow them
    2-4  to unionize; the boycott achieved its purpose and laborers were
    2-5  allowed to join the union; and
    2-6        WHEREAS, Cesar Chavez's dedication to mankind is
    2-7  unsurpassed; an entire generation will remember him for his
    2-8  courage, his devotion to his goals, his tenacity, and his dreams;
    2-9  children of farm laborers now have greater hope for the future
   2-10  because Cesar Chavez won a future for them; now, therefore, be it
   2-11        RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
   2-12  73rd Legislature, hereby pay homage to the life of Cesar Chavez
   2-13  and honor his memory on May 23, 1993; and, be it further
   2-14        RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
   2-15  family of Cesar Chavez as an expression of deepest sympathy from
   2-16  the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it
   2-17  do so in memory of Cesar Chavez.
