No. 969 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-1 WHEREAS, It is estimated that nearly 2.5 million Texans are 1-2 over the age of 60; and 1-3 WHEREAS, Texas has one of the largest populations of elderly 1-4 of all the 50 states; and 1-5 WHEREAS, The number of qualified health care and human 1-6 service providers who minister to this population is not keeping 1-7 pace with this growth rate and is inadequate to meet the state's 1-8 needs; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Research shows that health care and services for the 1-10 elderly provided by advanced nurse practitioners which include 1-11 gerontological clinical nurse specialists proficient in gerontology 1-12 and geriatric health care result in lower hospitalization rates; 1-13 now, therefore, be it 1-14 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 73rd 1-15 Legislature, hereby request that all health and human services 1-16 education programs resulting in licensure or certification by the 1-17 State of Texas include studies in gerontology or geriatric health 1-18 care; and, be it further 1-19 RESOLVED, That these programs include clinical learning 1-20 activities with the elderly; and, be it further 1-21 RESOLVED, That the licensing or certification boards for 1-22 health care and human service providers include content in 1-23 gerontology or geriatric health care in their examinations; and, be 2-1 it further 2-2 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 2-3 forwarded to the Texas Department on Aging as an official 2-4 expression of the sentiment of the Texas Senate. 2-5 _____________________________________ 2-6 President of the Senate 2-7 I hereby certify that the 2-8 above Resolution was adopted by 2-9 the Senate on May 24, 1993. 2-10 _____________________________________ 2-11 Secretary of the Senate 2-12 _____________________________________ 2-13 Member, Texas Senate
