No. 997 1-1 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-2 In Memory 1-3 of 1-4 Jewel Guthrie Carter 1-5 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins with 1-6 the citizens of Georgetown, Texas, in mourning the loss of 1-7 Jewel Guthrie Carter who died April 14, 1993, at the age of 80; 1-8 and 1-9 WHEREAS, Mrs. Carter made many important contributions to 1-10 the citizens of Georgetown and will be remembered for her devotion 1-11 to her city and its residents; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Born on November 14, 1912, in Bartlett, Texas, 1-13 to Thomas and Martha Guthrie, Mrs. Carter was one of 11 children; 1-14 she received her education in the Williamson County schools and 1-15 married James Alton Carter on June 8, 1933; and 1-16 WHEREAS, A dedicated and diligent businesswoman, 1-17 Mrs. Carter managed the Piggly Wiggly grocery store in Georgetown 1-18 for many years; she also owned and operated the popular L&M Cafe; 1-19 and 1-20 WHEREAS, Mrs. Carter took an active interest in the 1-21 progress of her community and freely gave of her time and energy 1-22 to its welfare; she served several terms as president of the 1-23 Georgetown Business Women's League and the local chapter of the 2-1 American Association of Retired Persons; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The esteemed individual earned the confidence 2-3 and respect of all who worked with her and became the first woman 2-4 in Georgetown to serve on the board of directors of the Georgetown 2-5 Chamber of Commerce; and 2-6 WHEREAS, To express their appreciation for her years of 2-7 valuable service, the citizens of Georgetown honored Mrs. Carter 2-8 with the Woman of the Year award in 1977; and 2-9 WHEREAS, Her warmth, wise counsel, and friendship will 2-10 be deeply missed and remembered with gratitude by those who were 2-11 fortunate to know such an outstanding citizen; now, therefore, be 2-12 it 2-13 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-14 73rd Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to her bereaved 2-15 family: her daughters, Glenda Simank and Nelda Burson; her brother, 2-16 Ray "Buddy" Guthrie; her grandsons, Scott Burson, Brent Keese, and 2-17 Johnny Simank; her granddaughters, Carolyn Dunk, Stephanie Simank, 2-18 and Julie Burson; and her three great-grandchildren; and, 2-19 be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-21 members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the 2-22 Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so 2-23 in memory of Jewel Guthrie Carter. 2-24 _____________________________________ 2-25 President of the Senate 3-1 I hereby certify that the 3-2 above Resolution was adopted by 3-3 the Senate on May 20, 1993, 3-4 by a rising vote. 3-5 _____________________________________ 3-6 Secretary of the Senate 3-7 _____________________________________ 3-8 Member, Texas Senate
